I am willing to bet reasonable money that, after the "let's recover from that shock" flashback-based episode 6, Eren will survive (and probably get prosthetics, apparent tech levels notwithstanding), most likely due to Mikasa. But in the meantime: OH MY GOD THEY KILLED THE PROTAGONIST!!! (And how often do you get to say that, huh? XD

ETA: And I never thought this would be a footnote to a post about some other anime, but...just watched Evangelion Rebuild 3.33. Maybe I was expecting too much, given how insanely god-tier the first two were, but this one...was...average? I dunno...the first section was neat, but then there seemed to be too much "missing" from between the end of 2.22 and 3.33. I mean..

Okay, is the Shinji we see in this movie ("Test Subject BM03" or whatever) *actually* Shinji? Or is it just a clone/recreation? Because that was the impression I had at the start of the movie, given it seems unlikely that they managed to extract Shinji from Eva-01 (come on, the preview at the end of 2.22 starts with "Shinji and Rei are still stuck in Eva-01", ffs!) but decided to just leave Rei in there. And considering 01 managed to come awake for a while...plus, without Shinji, the whole movie would have gone a lot better, so surely there must be some purpose to reviving/cloning him? And apparently we missed the bit where Mark 06 gets Longinus'd (wasn't it Unit 01 that was pinned at the end of 2.22?) and/or infected with the twelfth Angel...and when did they pull Longinus out of Unit 01? Whose bright and risky idea was that/?!?!!/ So yeah, kinda working through this one/wondering what I've missed. Maybe I'm just too tired. Gonna have to rewatch and reevaluate. But it has nothing on 2.22, that's for sure...

Guess it kinda felt like a bit of fanservice/a send-up of the end (and End) of Evangelion original, in some parts, too... :S

Well, I never saw it as children's media. I knew it was mature themed. And I didn't mean I overlooked it on purpose, I just never got around to it. I might check it out, myself. This forum has rarely given me bad suggestions. Nearly every direction I've been pointed towards has been something I enjoyed.

i can give you some good suggestions if that's what you're shopping for. What kind of shows do you usually watch?

Jormungand is picking up, Shinsekai Yori is revving up nicely but I'm saving it for later as my eyes are pretty screwed up so I need to take things slow with shows it seems.

I haven't been able to find a decent copy of the OVA, but I want to watch it. The anime was quite convoluted at the end, but it more or less made sense - well, aside from what exactly was actually going on and why, lol. It's always fun to be a bit confused. XD

Depending on your region, you can probably either watch it on Funimation.com (or their YouTube channel), or Crunchyroll.com (who I believe has the closest thing to a simulcast of the show atm). I think the protagonist now shifts to a combination of the blonde dude and Mikasa? Some sort of revive Eren or honor his memory thing like a Full Metal Alchemist with the suit of armor being a memory/giant food? No idea here. They could go anywhere.

I think that's the real Shinji, with maybe an original head glommed onto a clone body. Asuka went and got Unit 01 from space after it got all wrapped up into the Angel and so on. It could have been a couple years before Shinji got revived and in the mean time, WILLE could have used the Longinius Spear to attack NERV and thus get 06 with it. It explains how quickly Asuka and Mari got to the bottom of NERV and knew where to go - they paired up with their two EVAs to break through somehow. It also explains the time it took to go from 01 retrieval to building Wunder around it. The Rei that Shinji knew probably is still inside 01, but he's got some kind of psychic connection to all the Reis and to his mother.

On the whole, I liked this movie. Quite a bit. I thought the fastforwards 14 years and the introduction of a new angle to the story's ending was terrific. It initially confuses, but once you think about it some more, pieces start to fall in place. The plan of Shinji's father is still unknown though and I've no idea why SEELE turns out to be a bunch of supercomputers/brain towers instead of actual people. The rewriting (drastic) of Kaworu is quite the mindfuck. He goes from some random chance thing to being a guided Angel/clone missile aimed by Shinji's father/SEELE directly at an abortive 4th Impact. But then he turns out to be a good guy. Wow.

WILLE being so directly anti-Gendo is pretty powerful stuff. But somehow that's within Gendo's plan. And so is Kaworu being a good guy too. Shinji ends up in a good place for him - surrounded by self-actuating EVA pilots and going towards his own freedom and 01. Somehow, that's within the plan too. I think Gendo is a freaky deaky version of God that's somewhat benevolent and puts people through hard times in order for them to self-actuate and get to better situations. Or things could go pear-shaped in the last movie and really sadden us all.

Great movie. Great mindfucks. So much better than the TV series.

Armin is workable, but if he goes from can't-do-anything-but-is-clever to legit protagonist, I'll be pissed. I can see what you're saying with Mikasa, but as I'm pretty sure you'll see in the next episode, her world revolves around Eren and protecting him/paying him back for past deeds; if Eren is legitimately dead, I'm pretty sure she'll be on the "useless Titanbait" side of the scales by way of grief. And she's the best option for complimenting Armin's brains with brawn, so assuming she doesn't arbitrarily break character, he's also not really viable by himself. Plus they will have to spend another couple of episodes on character development, and while they've got 23/24 to play with...ballsy move, I guess?

In any case, I'm looking forward to it. I know the novels/manga are supposed to be pretty much "Anyone can die" material, so I can see it going either way.

Eh, I think I need to thoroughly rewatch it and see where I come out, but honestly...I don't feel like doing it. It's weird; I was really happy with 1.0, just a perfect rendering of the first part of Evangelion...and ZOMG Ramiel! (I swear, I've rewatched the bits with the giant morphic cube of DOOOOOM more times than any other movie...love that Angel...), and 2.0 was like OMGWTF SO COOOOOOOOL!!!!! It took things in a new direction and really stepped up the game like nobodies business.
This one...it feels somehow disconnected. The story is still fine, but nothing in there was earth-shattering for me. A little bit "wtf"-y, sure, but I found myself not caring about the plans, the counter-plans, or what was going to happen next. I don't even really know why.

Guess I've got no choice by to marathon all three now. *sigh* Oh, how ever will I cope? XD

I'm not too sure on how these Titans eat but I have yet to see them chew...The one woman that keeps stealing food is my first bet. Then theres the lone wolf with mad Judo skills that should be in the area aswell sooooo, yeah I'm thinking Erens gonna be a rescue.

But really, I'd put money on it at this stage, now that I've reflected on it more.

And also, looking back a page or two before this post, where I was tossing up about whether to watch this yet or not (along with Gargantia, which I'm also following), I am SO glad I did. Even if episode 5 was the pinnacle of this series, it was so worth it! XD


In other news: today I finished Chuunibyou; not bad slice-of-life/high school comedy with a bit of a difference from the always-visually-stunning KyoAni. Apparently a second season has been announced which will have a better storyline; it will be nice if this is true because while the series was OK, and had it's moments, it was decidedly average. I just need Kadokawa to hurry up and give the greenlight/commission KyoAni to do the next Haruhi, though...
Probably not as good as Nichijou on the balance of things, even though this actually had a main plot.

Also finished ef; A Tale of Memories. Gets two thumbs up on the "emotional investment" front, even if it was the storyline which I was not originally invested in that

which I actually maybe appreciate. The overall message of the series (summarized at the end) was pretty beautiful, all things considered.
The abstract presentation for which SHAFT is known for and some of the way in which the stories

all end up nice and resolved with mostly-happy endings

do lend some more credibility to the claims of pretentiousness I've seen thrown around about it. That being said, given the subject matter, I think the style actually fit really well and overall the themes were handled pretty well. It just comes off a bit "artistic" and heavy-handed at the outset; especially so, I imagine, if you either don't like SHAFT's style or don't enjoy the story, or both.

So yeah, enjoyed that, now on to the second season/sequel, "a Tale of Melodies"!

That being said, horrendously ill-suited backing music aside, the trailer you posted looks interesting. May research the original, but either way will have to keep an eye on this. (Feels a bit like One Piece...IN SPACE plus typical hero plot, but that might just be the Space Pirate theme, lol...)
