On a slightly related but different topic:

https://www.theverge...ing-controversy

Not sure if Lakeith Stanfield doesn't understand what "whitewashing" is, or if *I* don't understand what "whitewashing" is.

(In either case, "people can make up their minds after they go see it" is complete and utter bullshit - oh, we can tell you whether we thought your movie was socially toxic or not AFTER we pay to see it and send the only message the producers really ever get? Yeah, that's a swell idea. /s)

I'm also not sure how I feel about the argument from adaptation. On the one hand, it's not like Journey to the West or something hasn't been adapted and re-adapted countless times into different cultures and settings, mostly without *too* much fuss. On the other...that's a pretty strong argument to turn away fans of the source material. "The adaptation is so fundamentally different that the original culture it was set in is now irrelevant"? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. (More importantly, does simply setting a movie somewhere undercut accusations of whitewashing? Or IS that part of the whitewashing? For example, Ghost in the Shell already had a setting where the culture and ethnicity of the characters could be questioned or re-interpreted, the far-flung future where there is only beige and cobbled together cultural soup, plus, you know, extensive advancements in artificial bodies and genetic manipulation...thus at least partially opening the door for transplanting the actors (though still problematic as highlighted at the time). But this? Sure, taking the plot and wholesale transplanting it doesn't undercut any key elements of the story but does that obviate any social quandary or implication? Argh. My head.)

The term whitewashing doesn't mean anything anymore. By my understanding, the term really/originally means casting white actors to play non-white characters, like when John Wayne played Genghis Khan. But that has nothing to do with whether the source material is an adaptation or not. Hollywood doesn't usually do that so much anymore, so now people seem to throw the term whitewashing around at anything, like Ghost in the Shell being called whitewash even though it is set in a fictional future, had a very diverse cast, and its main character is *supposed* to look like a European white woman.

This Death Note adaptation isn't keeping the story in Japan and pretending that Light is still a Japanese boy while having him be played by a white actor - they're changing the story so the character is a white American and is being played by a white American. Likewise for the other characters.

IMO a "re-localized" adaptation (or to use a TVTropes term, I guess this would fall under "Setting Update") is a totally different thing than whitewashing and every culture does it. There's a Chinese version of What Women Want set in China with Chinese characters. Bollywood Superman is Indian, in India. There's a Korean movie version of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly set in Manchuria with Korean characters. Name any modern artistic culture and I'll bet it has a re-localized version of Hamlet or MacBeth, if not twenty.

So sure, maybe some people wanted Hollywood to make Death Wish a much more ambitious (and expensive) project that was still set in Japan, with all Japanese characters and therefore a Japanese cast. But I guess the Hollywood producers think doing a less-exact adaptation that is re-localized to Seattle will be more likely to sell and succeed with theatre-goers (and they're probably right). Doesn't make it white-washing, just makes it a re-localized adaptation. The source-material/anime fans can be upset by this if they want, but that doesn't make it wrong.

If you are doing a re-imagining something that exists in another culture and doing it in the western culture thats not white washing. That's appropriation. Much how like Akira Kurosawa appropriated King Lear to make ran.

Appropriation isn't bad per se, as long as the intent is to treat the original piece with respect. In regards to that, we'll have to wait and see won't we?

Whoops, my bad. Let's chalk that up to a knee-jerk WTF reaction, yeah? And I didn't notice the first one.

Though I imagine that this is the point where your face goes shadowy, we can't see your eyes and you have a grin on your face whilst cracking your knuckles. I am afeared, D'rek.

Further updates as the new job has me busy and anime slots are something I'm still working out:

CW: Felt like filler this week, nothing much happened, a bit of minor character development was all there really was.

Aho-Girl: This seems to be slowing down a lot. There were a few moments of humour but compared to the manic pace of the opening episodes, I'm worried that it's going to stall.

PrinPrin: Ah, now this was interesting and there's a need for those tags here.
Spoiler

HNG: It's moving further and further from being a ridiculous harem anime and closer towards a genuine and touching romance. Minoru is still going to prison eventually, though. Goddamn lolicon.

On other points:

Not seen Tatami, will have a look once I'm not at my desk (ME is generally a desk thing now). And blood brother is a term we'd use as well, but quite antiquated. Most people would just say 'brother' for someone they were that close to, just inferred in the sense that it's a non-biological relationship.

But *actually* I can't exactly remember what happens along each episode, so I can guess where you're at, but not quite sure. I think you're just past the club shopping trip episode, but not up to the swimming pool episode yet?

Totally agree, the origin/setup is done and we've gotten a good amount of backstory for all the cast now, so it's nice to now have these middle episodes where we actually see the whole team operating together with good inter-dynamics.

Although a lot of that backstory could be bull-crap since they're spies... who knows what the later episodes are going to flip over on us.

I'm not actually sure if Tatami will be your cup of tea or not, but it's one that everybody should at least try the first episode or two at some point. It's very bizarre and difficult to follow, but extremely creative and artistic. Plus the timing is quite good as if you like it there's a movie by the same staff in the same setting that came out recently and should be findable in English relatively soon!

I've hardly seen any anime, but I've started watching Tokyo Ghoul as I found it on a random sky channel.

Is this like the stuff you guys are watching? I'm quite enjoying it so far.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

There may have been discussions about tokyo ghoul back when it was airing.

At this point drek and mark are commenting about the shows they are following monthly, with the odd discussion here and there.

My shows keep going on hiatus (altair and re creators, the latter of which is amazing everyone needs to watch it!!!!!!)

Hit us up for recommendations when your done if you want more.

We watch all kinds of stuff! Some of it is indeed urban-fantasy action thrillers like Tokyo Ghoul, though I personally haven't seen Tokyo Ghoul at all.

What's it like? What are you enjoying about it? Any moments you just want to gush about how cool or awesome they were?

I'm not going to gush about it, but it's pretty engaging so far - a boy (Kaneke) has become half ghoul/half human, and now can no longer eat human food but at the same time can't bring himself to eat people. So he's discovered and been taken in by some ghouls who own a coffee shop (coffee is the only human food they can taste) and is becoming initiated into this underground world hidden in plain sight.

I'm a massive Ghibli fan, and I've seen a few movies by the other guy (Wolf Children, Summer Wars etc) but this has got some nice animation and a suitably bloody and different theme.

One channel stuck all of season 1 on over one night, and season 2 the next, so I've been watching one or two eps each evening.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Ships gotta sail Maark, ships have gotta sail. You don't just setup two characters in an unexpected situation like that and then not have them fall in love and be a whimsical couple.

You hear that Silencer and LP??? "very, very impressed". Hurry up and get on this, would you? :(

I've not heard anything about a second season. The manga (or is it LN?) continues beyond the climax of season 1, but I don't think there's any plans to continue the adaptation. Probably for the best, I think it'd be hard to top/repeat that ending.

And yes, LP, Silencer, if you avoid it you are sosijis and will br grilled accordingly.
