Sweet, thanks! I've got Volumes 1-4 already bought, and I have Volumes 5-8 on my Xmas list...Vol. 9 comes out here in January, which I think means that will be the point when the Manga released here overtakes the show as it airs....depending on when S2 airs. At any rate, it means I can comfortably read up to Vol. 8 before watching the show.

Season 2 starts in January, too!

Any idea how long the manga is supposed to go, total? By my count there's about 160 chapters/18 volumes worth of chapters so far, but if each anime season covers about 70 chapters I don't think they can do a season 3 one year after season 2, like the current rate is going. The anime is basically being developed twice as fast as the manga right now. Unless the manga is supposed to end within another year or so, the anime is going to catch up after this season and then either have to stall for a long time, slow down to a new season every 2.5 years, or just stop the altogether.

I've only read that it's "ongoing". But yeah, the show will either wait for the manga....or perhaps stride off on its own with story info from Matsui himself?

Maybe... the show has definitely been selling well for an anime, but it's certainly not prime time. I'm not sure if they would think it's worth having the show spin itself off just for the sake of continuing on a yearly schedule. They've got the huge boost in manga sales they were hoping for, I tend to think they would lean more towards just stopping production for a few years and maybe resuming the show a few years later.

Um...I also know nothing of it.

But I come from the older days of Anime watching in the 90's when we had to rent fansubs at the comic store on Videocassette....and buying a season of a given anime show cost you hundreds of dollars and take up whole swathes of space on your shelf. (Seriously, I owned most of EVA on videotape for example, each tape was 4 episodes only, and cost probably $40...so the entire series was like $260...and it was only one season!)

So perhaps it came after my time?

you obviously didn't watch fox kids/YTV growing up there QT

basically its one of my favourite shows from when i was growing up. They decided to make a sequel and so far it's been nothing but delicious fan service! (not the t/a variety ofc).

Yeah, I was vaguely aware of the kids show at some point (I think maybe it started airing before I moved here?) but I never watched it. Seemed like just some pokemon clone (not that I watched very much of the pokemon show, either)?

So this Digimon Tri show is a sequel and now airing? So it's like Pokemon XYZ?

pokemon clone...
pokemon clone...
pokemon clone...

Joking aside, while both shows were made to move merchandise they were quite different and digimon was vastly superior. Pokemon very much suffered from the fact the characters never really grew or matured and it was a very repetitive story. Theres also the fact that pokemon are just monsters and with certain epceptions aren't actual characters.

Digimon had a long story divided into several arcs and characters grew and developed as the series progressed, it did employ the whole shounen trope of emotions are power but it had some decent depth to it.

JO did a ton of videos on the show

Now from what i can gaterh XYZ is just another reboot, digimon tri is a continuation from digimon adventure 01/02 as opposed to a completely different spinoff that the other shows were.

I did, but then I'm likely older than you (38) so the programming when I was growing up was more Robotech, G-force/Battle Of The Planets, Transformers, GI JOE, and the like.

In fact at that time the only anime you could feasibly get your hands on at the time in North America was AKIRA, GITS (original), NINJA SCROLL, and the original PATLABOR, GUNDAM, and BUBBLEGUM CRISIS.

Oh, and that was around when SAILOR MOON ran its YTV run of the cut up episodes for Sailor Moon-R (they didn't run the later seasons until the late 90's)...and it was pretty much the only Anime on TV.

Look like Digimon didn't start airing in Japan until 1999...at which point I would have already been 22 and too old for a youthful anime like that.

It looks bright, and colourful though.

In animated form, Digimon is indeed superior to Pokemon. The quality of the TV series stories is very heavily in favor of Digimon because Pokemon was forced to be a sort of evergreen, not-grow-up Peter Pan type deal and they turned Pokemon into essentially assembly factory work.

However, the early dubbed Digimon movies don't make sense because the North American distributors chopped out a bunch of parts that provided context. I don't know why they did that, but watch the subbed versions whenever you can.

They did this with Sailor Moon too. It was cut to absolute ratshit on North American TV. It was turned into a monster of the week show with no external conflict or other story. It was like "Queen Beryl is evil and keeps sending villains against us! Teenage life is hard!" full stop.

It's most glaring when Neptune and Uranus are introduced, and on the North American version they are COUSINS who happen to live together. In the original version in Japan they are lovers more devoted to one another than Usagi and Tuxedo Mask are. Their story is great, and for the 90's was very progressive, and they were amazing Sailor scouts partially because they were so in tune with one another. The US dub by DiC removed any of the overtly identifiable lesbian aspects (which is weird because all they ever did was kiss...nothing more), it was cut and thrown out completely...leaving in the instances where they could not clip it out (in action sequences, or when their story overlapped with the main arc of a given episode) so what you got was this weird story of these intimate-seeming, kissing cousins. I remember it making big waves over here because it was so weird. It wasn't until about a year after that season aired here (2001 I think) that the truth came out from those who'd watched the Japanese subs and explained what their role was supposed to be. And the general consensus was that if DiC had left their love story alone it would not have caused the stir that the cut up version did.

That was the worst of their transgressions...but not the only one. Whole arcs are slayed in terms of oversimplifying the seasons into something they thought that Western kids could get into. So you lose whole swathes of dialogue and scenes that give important context to a given season...and the end result feels lesser.

And by the time they got to the Sailor Stars season they abandoned adapting and dubbing it completely due to the fact that the Sailor Stars were actually Boys who transformed into evil fighting girls when in their super form...and Usagi has a relationship with one (but only in his/her Stars form...so as a girl).

But yeah, American companies have along history of shitty dubbing and cutting due to what they think that western kids will or won't understand.

All of that is very true. But on the other hand, the NA companies messing around with the works they licensed is what gave us the the greatest anime OP of all time.

I hope you're being facetious...since THIS is the best opening of all time... (Which I still want to dance around to)

...and while we are at it, the best ending is this (Which my wife, who's not at all an anime fan, sings along with if it's on when she's in the room):

Re: ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM anime...(while reading the manga [on Vol. 3 now] I was curious what the voices would sound like) so, why is the English dub for Koro Sensei SO far off character? I mean the guy sounds completely normal and not at all like how Koro Sensei should sound. The Japanese voice actor for Koro Sensei blows him completely out of the water...he sounds EXACTLY like what I expected him to sound like. Looks like I won't bother with the dub version when I watch it, the sub will be that much better just for that voice alone.
