@ Silencer

I don't find it detracts from viewing, as I can do both at the same time. Unless I'm drunk.

Well, if not both at the same time, my reading speed makes it a matter of reading at a single glance.

Yeah, I can get through them rapidly too - I still miss things/have to watch them several times to get the full experience. It doesn't matter in films like Das Boot, or in anime like Darker than Black/Fullmetal Alchemist so much. But Noir? It'd hurt. Disappearance, it's annoying, hands down. *shrug* It's not necessarily a case of missing the entire action - it's the change from one thing to the next that is both important and easy to miss. I dunno, maybe it's the size of my screen that is affecting things (tiny, that is to say).

it all has to do with how commited translators are to expositions (how they explain a joke etc). The english dubs just gloss over the undercurrents of the japanese language. Subs attempt to explain these underlying subtexts, helping you follow the subplots correctly. Something like Gintama for example is impossible to enjoy if you didn't freeze frame every now and then to catch up on puns etc. Thats why most fans loathe dubs. Much worded content, important to the story is misrepresented or completely left out.

Then I'm very fortunate in that the dubs and subs I've compared for my various favorite shows are almost identical. It depends a lot on who makes the show, of course, how it was originally written (Haruhi, for example, being a light novel doesn't exactly hurt the quality of the dialogue while remaining easy to understand), and who does the translation.

Either that, or I just figure out the underlying subtexts on my own very rapidly and so don't miss much. ^_^

I am kind of picky. I will go out of my way to research just WHO did an english dub script of an anime. For example, Amanda Winn-Lee and her husband Jason did the Eng Dub Script for Evangelion all the way up to and through the initial film releases for ADV Films and they are literally as close as you can get to the Japanese text. If you listen to the audio commentary for the films, the respect that those two have for the source material is amazing and they'd never want to ruin it. So if someone I KNOW (or at least the word is that it's been well translated) who did the dub, then I'll watch the dub. COWBOY BEEBOP, FLCL, SUMMER WARS (I've watched it both subbed and dubbed and it loses nothing in the translation), PRINCESS MONONOKE (actually, you are pretty safe with most Studio Ghibli stuff as Miyazaki and his son are both known to be VERY discerning with who adapts their properties and the translation....I know this because we asked the question when I saw MONONOKE screened at TIFF way back when and he was there and answered).

However, there are examples where anime has been brought over and totally BUTCHERED from the source material, like the entire Sailor Moon run of the TV series was cut to ratshit on YTV eliminating everything that was actually GOOD in that story, and the English dub of 5 CENTIMETERS PER SECOND absolutely RUINS the film completely....same goes for BURST ANGEL, KIDDY GRADE and even something as popular as MACROSS is destroyed by script writers who have no interest in adapting the films or series as they are.

So I think as long as you are careful in what you choose and how then dubbing can be very well done...but if you are concerned, then subbing is of course the easier option.

The HARUHI dubbing is fairly good, as I watched the entire first season subbed the first time I saw it, and then later when I got the DVD I watched the dub and it doesn't lose enough to be concerned.

i agree QT. The qulity of the dub leans highly on the respect the dub team have for the content. To be fair some anime scripts like flcl are too fast paced to expect a good dub. In my experience the best dubs come from vividly smooth movies like Mononoke and Howls moving castle. I think the worst english dub i've watched was for a show called Golden Boy. I almost gave the entire thing a skip but for the subbed option on the DVD. After the switch the story literally got twice as good.

To start, I didn't read all 8 pages. (Lazy).

My girlfriend recently got me back into anime. This is what we've watched so far:

Ergo Proxy - This is her favorite (Or second, maybe) anime of all time. I like it a lot too.
FLCL - I hope someone has seen this. It is pure gold. 6 episodes, all brilliant. This might be her favorite, and I enjoyed it greatly.
The Melancholy of Haruhi somethingerother - I loved this, way outside of my usual style of anime but she suggested it. (I suggested Ergo Proxy, so I had to give hers a go).
Code Geass - I suggested this one. It can be ridiculous at times, but, imo, if you're going to watch a robot fighting anime, this one has a little depth atleast.
Witch Hunter Robin - Watched a few episodes of this, then got distracted by Haruhi. Might go back eventually.
Black Blood Brothers - A vampire anime. Not terrible, not amazing either. Enjoyable , though.
Darker Than Black - We just started this, and we're flying through it. It is extremely enjoyable.
Ouran Highschool Host club - Please tell me someone has heard of this. She is making me watch it, and by God it's painful.
Death Note - We both thought it was intellectual. After watching Ergo Proxy, our opinions of this anime dropped immensely.
Fullmetal Alchemist - She hated it, I absolutely loved it. (Haven't watched the new brotherhood series, but I did watch the movie).

There has to be more that I'm forgetting... anyway, here's a list of anime I have ready to watch.

Durarara!!, Berserk, Black Butler, Chrome Shelled Regios, Full Metal Panic!, Ghost in the Shell - SAC, GunGrave, Gurren Lagann, Haibane Renmei, Heroic Age, Kaze No Yojimbo, Monster, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Peacemaker Kurogane, Robotech, Texhnolyze, Trinity Blood.

If you see anything I'm missing, or you have comments about what to watch next (Or what to never watch) they'd be appreciated.

Here are comments on some of them...

GunGrave is a strange one if I remember right it is two very distinct parts one pretty good and one attrocious.

Id avoid robotech in favor of watching the original version/cut/whatever The Super Dimension Fortress Macross which should be the first arc of the robotech that was shown in the west. While the whole would be if I remember right three diffrent series cut and dubbed into one series.

Berserker have serious problems with ending where the background material (manga) was at the time of its making meaning the last episodes makes little sense and there is no real resolution. By the way a new version is probably in the making... Still the earlier parts of it are pretty decent thought nowhere near the manga which is gorgeous.

I'd recommend try to pick up again on Witch Hunter Robin, test if Kaze no Yojimbo is to my liking (its not in everyones taste) or go with Trinity Blood for some over the top vampire fun.

I actually much prefer Golden Boy's dub to the original voice acting. So do most people I know who have seen it.

The worst dub I ever saw was actually Ninja Scroll.

Currently watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (subbed), and enjoying it. Stupid art style breaks every five minutes annoy me, though, reminding me of the things I dislike about anime. Otherwise it's a good show so far. ^_^ (Halfway through)

I found that there were less and less of those breaks as the series got more serious later on.

Yeah, it does get a bit better. I can live with the occasional bit, but it's annoying. Anyway, really quite enjoying FMA: Brotherhood - even though I've had to switch to watching it online (didn't have the full set downloaded, unfortunately): TAKE THAT STUPID NEW INTERNET LAWS. YOU HAVE STOPPED NOTHING.
Colonel Mustang is by far the most awesome character in this, btw. Fucking badass. XD (I'm only up to episode 53, so no spoilarz please)

Also, as I felt like taking a small break from Brotherhood this evening, I watched the first episode of To Aru No Majutsu Index. While the quality of the vid I watched was poor, and most of the episode was mediocre, if interesting - oh my god. The opening scene on the bridge with Ms. Railgun? Epic win. Potentially the best opening scene/character introduction EVAR. XD

And when my bandwidth gets low, or I run out of Brotherhood episodes (whichever happens first), I'm totally doing a proper rewatch binge. Everything I've watched so far, over again. That should be fun. ^_^

To be quite honest. It is an anime that was created to target fangirls. To make fun of them. Which they fucking love to pieces. The irony, oh the irony.

Brotherhood is at least twice as good as the original. Probably more like 4 times. Well, well, well, well worth it.

GITS is amazing. Gurren Lagann is an absolutely hilariously preposterous over-the-top show (well, not for the first couple episodes.). NGE has several endings. So.... I'm not going to recommend a particular one. But be prepared for a whole heaping helping of "What. The. Balls." because the author was EXTREMELY MENTALLY UNSTABLE when he wrote it.

Outside of any particular series, a movie that everyone should watch is Paprika. Better yet, find some drugs or alcohol and THEN watch Paprika.

paprika was good viewing. Almost like howls moving castle.

just watched akenobashi magic shopping arcade. Its like FLCL but not. Like doctor who but not quite there. It was actually a helluva fun to watch and the ending wasn't too shabby either.

Left me with that 'aha i learn't something today' kinda feel. Very funny. The further in it goes the wackier it gets. In this english dubs proved most entertaining.

Agreed with pretty much everything. And yeah, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, is pretty damn win! Also, Roy Mustang. 'Nuff said.

Neon Genesis Evangelion should be watched, leaving you confused. THEN Rebuild of Evangelion should be watched, leaving you wanting SO. MUCH. MORE. (Two more movies to go, yay!)

I learned a lot of Japanese from Subbed Anime over the years with some repeated words in all Anime...like Gomenasai (properly "I'm sorry") or the like.

watched the Gundam OO movie yesterday. Am not impressed.

I go through anime phases occasionally. I generally watch mecha-based anime, because of my ingrained love of Voltron and Transformers (fondest memories of childhood)

I occasionally watch other stuff, too. I generally find a title on TvTropes, and go from there. it's how I discovered Death Note.

I had a friend at work this summer who was absolutely in love with Deadman Wonderland. seeing as it's the same person who suggested Code Geass to me, i'll likely watch it soon.

Movie came out last year, I think.

I've watched (in order)
Gundam Wing--the first I watched, fairly good, they used to air it on tv in Canada. not too heavy on philosophy, and lots of action.
Seed + destiny. I loved SEED, but I felt they really went in the wrong direction with a bunch of characters in DESTINY. this might have had someothing to do with the fact that SEED was basically the re-imagining of the original Gundam series (which i've never watched)
Gundam X (far less popular, more bleak and low-tech but it had its moments)
Double O was good, but I watched it at the same time as Code Geass. which basically blows it out of the water. Because Geass was amazing.

I had decent-sized collection of anime a few years ago, but I lost it when my external hard drive died on me. I have now set out to rebuild it this year.

is that Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann?
it's on the list.

I generally watch 3 types of anime
mecha
fantasy in modern* setting(like Hellsing)

or cyberpunk-themed (Serial experiments Lain)

I tend to go for complex stuff, which I find via tv tropes.

and I avoid the mainstream "high-school"-themed stuff like the plague.
