It had a couple of great entries, but the rest of the offerings were only decent, I thought. At least of what I watched.
2014 lineup so far, anyone got anything in their to-watch lists yet? Or outrageous predictions for shows we might see this year? XD

I don't know how many other theatre's have screenings but...EVANGELION 3.0 (Funimations English Dub) is playing this month at selected theatres. I've got my ticket already.

Yeah, he's a Torontonian. A Torontoite? A Toro?
Anyways, this is getting released at a time when I'm going to be out of the country in a place that has zero shot at getting legit showing of Japanese movies for the next 30 years. Damnit. Even if I was here, it'd have been 3 hours away from me at the closest. Further, damnit. I need to move to a bigger city.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I have just been briefly screening this thread, and I'm amazed at how much anime is being talked about that I've never seen nor heard of. Admittedly, I haven't gone out of my way to watch any anime recently or pick up any new series, but reading this thread has made me think I'm missing out.
Silencer et al, what are your "Top 5" suggestions (and on what websites can I find them for free)?

You’ve never heard of the Silanda? … It’s the ship that made the Warren of Telas run in less than 12 parsecs.

Thanks, I will check those out. Evangelion is old enough that I know that one (and have watched all of them), but the others I don't know.

Well, youtube is no good or bakemonogatari (not available in my country) and shin sekai yori isn't there either.

Not sure whether Crunchyroll, which blanketroll mentioned upthread and I know QT likes, is available in Japan, but you might want to try that instead of Youtube. I use Anilinkz, which for each video gives you a bunch of possible sources you can pick below the video player, so that might be worth a try, too in case at least one of those sources will be available.

Crunchyroll is great...and in Japan you might not even get the ads with a free account (like Silencer apparently can in NZ).
@ BalrogLord: Toronto indeed! Freezing ass cold place that it is right now.

Always gonna reccomend watchanimeon.com. I'm watching lucky star atm on a semi dare. Jokes on my bro, i'm loving it. Its like a polished azumanga daioh. Not sure if this is a trend in shoujo slice of life? its pretty funny though. Odd to watch anime like this. I often wonder what the western equivalent would be.

i couldnt get past the first 10 minutes of that show. A 10 minute conversation about eating apiece of food... It was too much. I don't know if i should applaud or pity you for finding it entertaining.

I tend to have similar conversations with alot of my friends. We are quirky that way I guess. It does get tiresome though. called it quits after ten episodes.
Hajime No Ippo Rising. the fifth Title defence was the very definition of intense, I don't know one person that wouldn't get pumped watching this.
Magi season 2: Magi is my new go to anime for a laugh. The action and story are great and I know at least one other person has been following this in thread. I really like it.
Gintama: the ggs are still good, just maybe annoyed by the slow pace of development.
Level E: how can they get such a good balance of creepy and funny? It bothers me so much! Watch if you like gintama.

After joining this thread 60 pages late from its first post, i will join the discussion merely by suggesting you watch Big-O. Sorry if somebody else has beat me here but I think might like that as a 'western-ish' style Anime. Think Batman with a mech and not a black spandex/leather/rubber/carbon fiber suit and you will hit pretty close to Big O. I think it is stylish, a little dark and moody and damn fun to watch.
Next I would suggest Evangelion, its so awesome, I think that the Pacific Rim creator basically watched it and thought 'man thats cool, lets rip the idea off and make a blockbuster movie.' It is Huge mechs fighting huge monsters trying to destroy the world, really fun to watch. I have only watched the newer ones that are on Blu Ray though, 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone, 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance and the third is out soon dubbed in English and that is called 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo.
I am not a huge Anime nut as I have only watched the ones my mates suggested, the above, along with Hellsing (the new ones that take about 3 years per episode to release lol), Trigun which is epic fun, story is immense and at times tragic, it also has a fantastic sense of humour. My personal favourite, Gungrave, that is damn good Anime! great story to that too in my opinion, awesome fight scenes etc you should probably read a synopsis of these to form your own opinion. Last but not least of the limited Anime I have seen is Full Metal Panic. I think this one is closest to the typical Anime, what with random school girls wearing silly outfits left right and centre, l**bian scenes scattered about etc. Not that this should put you off as the story is awesome if you can look past some of the cliches, this is another big mech anime but damn, its good!
I think you also miss the point of anime a little with not liking them because of the silly hair cuts etc (I only read the first post by the OP so I am by no means well informed on if you now like anime or hate it still :-P) I think the point of anime and JRPGs (which I think are in the same league of silly but awesome) is that they are fantastic and so allow easy escape of the drudgery of reality (which makes me sound depressed but I am not haha) I think the crazy hair and silly oversized b**bs on a size 4 frame etc are easy ways to throw you straight into the make believe and give a fast escape into the world you are watching or playing. Just think, if you didn't watch or play something because crazy hair made you think 'o crap another anime or JRPG i wont like' (just my bro does) then you have never entered the world of Final Fantasy, which means you haven't lived, at all! haha :-P
Anyways hope some of what rubbish I have just chatted can contribute to discussion and hopefully you may like some of my limited suggestions! Look forward to further discussion and some suggestions on epic anime for me to get stuck in to!
