[Mason of Death]

At the end of MOI, Dujek tells Paran that Quick's been made a High Mage. Dujek says "Tayschrenn insisted." Later, however, when Quick and Tays run into each other at the beginning of this book, Tayschrenn acts like he'd heard about Quick's promotion second hand, had no say in it, and doubts his abilities. Is this an inconsistency, or just soldiers being disparaging of each other (though Tays doesn't seem the type for that)?

Good question, i feel it could really go either way.
Its kind of hard to think that Erikson would slip up, but then the world hes created and the stories are so vast it would certainly be understandable.
I could also see it just Tay being Tay, hes never seemed to be much of a team player, or it could have just been Dujek saying that so no one would question it ? Its tough to tell

I think it's likely Dujek lying to dismiss any questions right from the start.

The way I read it, Tay was warning Quick that while he had promoted him to High Mage for merits on the battlefield or whatever it is he says, the Empress has yet to officially acknowledge it.

Yep and yep.

There was also the 'Ryth the Rude' thing, where QB was acting as a High Mage, possibly with the Emperor's backing, tho it's a bit vague.
