I'm halfway through Dust of Dreams (don't worry, not relevant to DoD) and I've had a few questions for some time that I hope someone can shed a bit of light on...
1.) a.) How long ago was the last chaining of the Crippled God?
I think the most recent one was in the last 12 years or so as Shadowthrone and Cotillion were present as was Dassem Ultor. What I don't understand is if the last one was as recent as this...
b.) Why was it so flawed that he has been able to influence the world so strongly? I can't imagine there's a chaining every decade or so...
2.) What is Shadowthrone's and Cotillion's motivation?
I don't even know what their end game is but happy for this to be revealed to me in the fullness of time - but given their more and more overt pulling of strings within the Malaz pantheon, what I would not mind is some speculation on what motivates them. Why did they explore the Azath? Simple curiosity? They'd conquered the known world so why not look into this mysterious house... Godhood? Again, conquered the mortal world, why not achieve immortality and ascendancy and godhood... Assuming I can buy those explanations, why involve themselves so intensely in all these grandiose schemes since then?

A couple of very big questions here, Ensi. I'll answer the first, attempt the latter, and leave you to draw your own conclusion.

1) The Crippled God has been chained many times. The latest was probably prior to 12 years ago, as I'm unsure where you get that number for. But, the one that had Cotillion and Dessembrae present seems to be the most recent. How does he continue to influence the world so strongly, despite the Chainings? A god's influence seems to be somewhat affected by his followers; beyond that however is the fact that the House of Chains is much present and humans are uniquely suited towards his house considering their fragility (imo).
2) Survive and Win.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

The last chaining, the one with Dassem, Kellanved and Dancer, was right before Dassem's "death" at Y'ghatan because from Temper's flashback in NoK we know that's when he broke with Hood.
