[Path-Shaper]

Fft fft fft fft fft. The whir of ship's propeller blades signal the cold open. A camera pans down through the air onto the deck of a ship where several people are seated and one is standing. The figure is familiar. In his khaki cargo shorts and blue shirt, Jeff Probst looks as eager as ever to get this season off.

"We're traveling over the Gulf of Guinea, approaching a small island off the coast of Western Africa named São Tomé. This small plantation-based island is home to roughly 50,000 former sharecroppers, plantation owners, and slavers... and 18 more people will call it home over the next 39 days as they embark on the adventure of a lifetime."

The camera pans away again, showing a 3/4 profile of the ship. In the distance, a small island approaches. Probst's voice continues over the scene.

"These people will spend the next several weeks getting to know each other as they attempt to live off the land in complete isolation from civilization. They will need to find food, water, and shelter as they strive to fend off the elements and each other. They must learn to adapt or they'll be voted out. In the end, only one will remain to claim the million-dollar prize and the title of Sole Survivor."

The camera circles over the boat and into the narrator once more. Probst's face grows serious as he concludes.

"39 days. 18 people. One survivor."

Fft fft fft fft fft. The sounds fade into the distance as the camera stops moving and the boat sails off toward the unknown.

[Path-Shaper]

A loud mechanical clang signals that the boats have stopped. Jeff Probst stands on the starboard side of the ship. Behind him, about 50 yards in the distance, the island of São Tomé awaits. You look around yourself, nervously.

"Welcome to Survivor," Jeff Probst begins, the all-too-familiar smirk on his face. It's infectious, everyone else smiles too, knowing that they've finally 'made' it. "Behind me is your new home for the next 39 days. But first, you have to get there."

The air is quiet save for the sound of the salty breeze. Someone speaks up, "Wait, how are we getting there?"

Jeff Probst puts a huge smile on his face and says, "On that beach, two special immunity necklaces are hidden. The first member from each tribe to find the necklace will be safe from the first Tribal Council vote for their tribe." He grabs a rope and pulls it, causing the railing of the ship to give way to the open water. "I suggest you get going if you want it!"

Everyone looks around at each other and then simultaneously starts running to jump into the water...

Day 1 - The Arrival

You have just arrived on São Tomé and have been thrust into an Individual Immunity Challenge. The first member of each tribe to make it to shore and find the necklace will be safe from the first Tribal Council vote. This challenge will be resolved automatically based upon your skills and abilities. I will resolve it when I feel that enough people have participated in the opening.

You may not use any activated abilities for this challenge.

The water. Is. COLD!

I barely hear the others splash as I dive off the boat - too deeply, and I've left the warm layer of heated water on the surface. I can't see anyone but Merrid. That's good - the rest must be behind me?. I work my arms and get a rhythm going. Not for the last time, I'm sure, I wish I had spent more time preparing myself for these challenges - diving? No, swimming. Should've swam more... gotta keep swimming.

I see D'riss pull into view from afar. All I have to do is reach the beach... from there, I'm golden.

This talk of sperm whales and stroking and breathing has got me a little hot and bothered.

[Kalse]

I risk a glance over my shoulder to see a huge sperm whale breaching the surface and Jeff Probst with his hand down his pants. Figures.

[D'riss]

Strrroke - breath - thought - i'm slowing down, I haven't swam in years. What's this underneath me? A massive shadow, aah its a whale... i'll just use it to catch my breath. Drat it has swam away. I think i'll just have to keep on swimming, keep on swimming, keep on swimming.

[Merrid]

A quick glance behind me confirms that the scream I just heard was kalse jumping into the cooler. Poor guy missed the water on his first try. Probably why he is freezing.

Looks like driss has gotten turned around again. Wow kalse is starting to gain on him now.

I hope that they keep an eye out for the shark.

ha ha the look on Merrids face when he glanced around then, it looks as if he thinks theres a shark about, someone must have told him about the fake fin I have in my waterpouch. should i put it on

I leap halfway to the beach with my first dive, pummel the shark into submission and trade him a ride in exchange for his life, witness the various struggles of the others as we whiz by, and finally, standing on the beach I shall magnanimously assist the others from the water.

I finally get my second wind but I refuse to glance at the beach. Not yet. Still too far away, I'm sure. Dark shapes bloom into view below me. Is that Fener down there? Poor bastard got a knife in his back already. No, wait. ...sharks? Someone has been singing the Jaws theme underwater - how do they have breath for that anyway? - but no matter. Just have to watch out for fins, now.
