Here is a quote:

Quote

She turned to see the four soldiers appear on the summit. Three men, one woman, mud-smeared and crimson-streaked, their faces almost bone-white

Then a few lines below the three men talk to each other:

Quote

he asked, turning to the tall, thin black-skinned man who came up beside him

then a few lines down

Quote

The third and last man, also black, slipped past on

Quote

The black man beside the sergeant glanced back at the young girl still standing a dozen paces behind them

I am a bit :gando: Black men with bone white faces?

Hmm....while typing it I got another idea. Maybe it means the faces were white because of debris falling from above after the fight? Although a description such as their faces almost bone-white reflects either the skin colour or state of fear?

ETA.
Or white dust because they just got out of collapsed tunnels?

This is the case, I think. I always take it as their faces being smeared in ashes/dirt and/or paled by shock. I imagine even dark-skinned people can look quite ashen when the above mentioned things apply. In any case, the skin colour is black.

And the other assassin is black too IIRC.

Sorry is Asian-looking, QB and Kalam are black. Not sure about Whiskeyjack off the top of my head. Can't remember him being mentioned as black, blue or anything else like that though.

Anyway, I think the bone-white reference would be describing the physical toll of the events they'd just experienced, like digging their way out of the tunnels and seeing the carnage outside the city.

Thanks guys :gando:

I will go through the scene again.
I was concentrating on their emotions that forgot that they barely survived tunnels collapse that took away the rest of Bridgeburners.

I've always thought of Whiskeyjack as black from the start but there are many that are convinced that he's white. The above quoted sections of form are why I thought he was black.

Whiskeyjack is from either Falar or Malaz Island, not sure right now, but the residents of both are fair/white-skinned, while residents of Seven Cities, like QB and Kalam, generally are dark/black-skinned. So we can assume WJ to be white.

I've frankly never really thought that much about WJ's skin colour (OK - I assumed that he is white-ish), always concentrated more on the idea that he's incredibly grizzled (hard lines, sunken cheeks, etc).

It's possible, but very unusual. It rather depends on your ancestry - i.e. usually whether their owner had his way with one of your female ancestors, unfortunately ;) Brown eyes are more usual (brown is a genetic dominant)

I say this as a black man who has green eyes.
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. I see.
I asked because WJ has grey eyes.

Quote

The man in the lead – a sergeant by the torque on his arm – came up to Tattersail. Set deep in a lined, exhausted face, his dark grey eyes searched hers dispassionately. 'This one?' he asked, turning to the tall, thin black-skinned man who came up beside him

As with every weathered soldier fantasy character of caucasiany descent, Whiskeyjack looks exactly like Sean Bean.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

my own personal opinion is that the first book is very badly written and is full of continuity errors. i also beleive thats why Erickson's so vague on details and covers everything by saying what you read is only ever the charactors opinion not fact.

To be honest if this forum didnt exist i would have given up at the beggining of Deadhouse Gates, but for all my reservations about this series i keep reading (im currently struggling my way through Midnight tides) because the scale of this story is epic .

What else do you expect? All knowing characters?

No i dont expect or want all knowing characters, some ambiguity is always needed and i well except that. But i have never ever read a book or series of books(and i have read a lot) that require so much work before. So far every new book in the series i read has a huge new cast of characters, that are usually very vaguely described.
And so it takes me most of the book to get to know and feel comfortable with them, only to find out that they wont be back for books later if at all.

Also the foreword in Gardens of the Moon and the change of writing style book by book just reinforced my perception that this was a first time author or something and maybe he 'had bit off more than he could chew'.

I only found this forum in the first place because i needed help with the first two books. With some info on the characters and all the posts saying 'stick with it its worth it' i persisted and enjoyed my reading a lot more.

whew glad i got that off my chest

Five books in and things are getting alot easier/better, some things still grate but i sort of know what to expect now so its not so bad. I also think Erikson's writing is improving as he goes along.
:D

I don't know what will happen in the future but I am 2/3 into the book and I love it so far.

He's black!?
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.
