Lorn and Magic

Does Lorn use magic? Here is an excerpt from p669, paperback, just after Lorn had released the Galayn Lord:

quote:
She unsheathed her sword and closed her eyes briefly, locating the Coin Bearer in her mind. He was fast, but she was faster. The adjunct smiled again. Now, the coin would be hers.

When she moved, it was a blur, quicker than any eye could follow, even that of a Galayn lord loose on the material plane.

Now, this has got to be one of SE's major mistakes in the series! How can Lorn produce such a supernatural action when she has the magic-negating sword? Or is there some other explanation than a mistake on SE's part?

I too have been stumped for some time about this particular passage. My friend and I have still not figured out how Lorn was able to move so quickly (assuming it is not a mistake). If anyone else has any ideas, I too would like to hear them.

What's the quibble here - placing a magical marker or moving really fast?

The first comes from her unusual relationship with magic - possessing the Otataral sword doesn't just make her immune to magic, it gives her some measure of control over "something" that lets her do vaguely magical stuff. She explains this herself at one point.

The second - I would just chalk that up to exaggeration. She was an excellent fighter and athlete, SE was just being poetic I suppose.

Ya, I took it literally when it was stated that she moved faster than the Demon Lord himself. Sure, Lorn is athletic, but in a world filled with superhuman gods, the comparison of an athletic human to a godlike demon seemed a bit...much. Oh well.

As Adjunct to the Empress, it's entirely possible that she recieved some sorcerous amplification of her abilities. Obviously the otataral sword would limit these, but some would still work. I suspect it's not her doing it though, but enchantments put on her by some claw wizard, or even Laseen...

Her abilities come not from her sword but from otatoral that she consumed ( I think she breifly mentions at one point somthing on the subject).

Like with the assasin in Darujihstan, when otatoral is directly applyed to somone, in addition to making them near immune to magic, it also grants them a variety of magic like abilities. The nature and type of abilities is perpudetly random.

Remeber Otatoral is not actulay "anti-magic" but rather its more like it eats magic.

With Lorn we know two things:
-she is able to heal frighteningly fast.
-And 2nd that it also lets her move with lightning speed

she really is able to move faster then the demon lord. Sadly this ended up being to slow compared to her eventual oponents (theres alwyas somone faster).

GotM'ism anybody?

Since we've heard very little of the sideeffects of Ottataral use since GotM I think Lorn's powers need to be taken lightly.

Side-effects of Otataral: I seem to recall a certain in HoC who because of substances you eventually learn are related to otataral. Don't know if that's the kind of thing you're looking for.

And that was just the problem with that description. She was afterall beaten by blues, an exceptionally gifted duelist (he lives for such) who had not an ounce of magic nor superhuman speed.

Blues is an Avowed of the Crimson Guard. We don't know what they are, but they are certainly no ordinary humans.

I don't know if someone said this before because it poped into my head after reading the first post.

She possess and Otataral sword that deadens magic but does not eliminate the magic. and another thing is that she has something in her or in her skin(?) that gives her magical abilities like enhanced endurance and speed.

~ The stuff in her skin(?) I think is Otataral Dust. If you remember that later on Ralick has a leather pouch of red dust (that is actually Otataral) that was given by Baruk and Baruk tells Ralick to rub the dust on his body but not on his skin because the skin absorbs it and [i]changes[i/] people.

- So in the case of the Adjunct, that change may perhaps be beneficial for her.
Any other suggestions?

correct.. and someone of a skill in dueling. speed means very little when you're outclassed by far.
