Instead of doing a "Just finished" post after every book I figure I will do an ongoing topic on my thoughts AS I'm reading the books. So be forewarned THERE WILL BE SPOILERS! SPOILERY SPOILERS!

YEP, THERE WILL STILL BE SPOILERS.

As I mentioned elsethread I've just started Furies of Calderon and I'm about 125 pages in. Enjoying the book so far but there are a couple of things that have really stuck out in my mind. The first being the mountain. Garados. GARADOS. GYARADOS!!!

Posted Image

^Seriously what I picture EVERY time I read about Garados looming in the background.

Secondly during the scene in which Aquitainus is introduced:

Quote

Upon a large chair covered in the fur of a grass lion from the Amaranth Vale sprawled a man --- as tall as Adrick, Fidelias judged, but more slender, and with the appearance of a young man in the prime of his youth. Aquitainus had high cheekbones and a narrow face, led by a strong jaw whose lines were softened by the tumble of dark golden hair that tumbled to his shoulders. He was a simple scarlet blouse with dark leather breeches and soft, black boots. A goblet dangled lazily from one hand, while the other held the end of a long strip of silken cloth that slowly unwound from the shapely girl dancing before him, gradually baring more and more of her skin. Aquitainus had eyesof pitch black, stark in that narrow face, and he watched the dancing slave with an almost feverish intensity.

All I could think of was Eric's introduction from the first season of True Blood.

Put him in a red shirt and BINGO!

Anyways, that is all. For now.

Never heard of Alera. What sort of fantasy is it? And what's it about?

Briar is right, this has grabbed my attention very well. It seems to be fairly straightforward sword and sorcery fantasy with a mild twist. The magic is gained from partnerships with elemental furies. Everyone in the land seems to bond with at least one at a young age so the 'magic' seems to be fairly commonplace. Anyways, gotta keep reading.

Book one is nothing. Book one is child's play. It introduces a few characters and overall ideas...but book 2 is way better, and book 3 will knock your socks clean off.

I had a serious hangover after reading tCG, I was at a total loss at to what to read next....

Totally forgot I had all six books on my laptop, flicking through my ebook folder and what do I see before my eyes... Codex Alera! Started the first book Sat night, it was finished Sun night, it got absolutely devoured and now I am 200 pages into the second book, some top Jim Butcher writing and I would recommend everyone to read, even from what I've seen from the first books!

This is my post-TCG plan.
I resisted starting the series on vacation because i didn't want to have to interrupt it.

I'm satisfied that you got me into Dresden (which led me to Alera too) and I can wholly recommend Alera to you now. I'm your pusher.

I'll be interested to see what you think.

FURIES OF CALDERON - S'good. Decent intro, but having read the whole series it's like a "prologue" more than anything else.

ACADEM'S FURY - really, really good and the REAL start of something special.

CURSOR'S FURY - is fucking badassery.

CAPTAIN'S FURY - is badass that's been wrapped with bacon and steak.

PRINCEP'S FURY - will melt your brain with Butcher-awesome...and bacon and steak and cheese.

FIRST LORD'S FURY - ...nah, I'm not going to say anything about this one.

Almost done with the first book now, about a hundred pages to go. Sadly taking longer than usual because of moving two households. However I must say that I REALLY enjoyed Giraldi and Harger's bit with Pluvus. "You wanted me to free them, right?" Also, can anyone find a decent drawing of a herdbane so I can stop imagining Chocobos? Chocobos of death!

Is there a reason the "Add an image" is disabled in this forum? I see it in the Phoenix Inn, but not here.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

They pretty much do look like Chocobo's though...LOL.

They are on the map from FIRST LORD'S FURY (as are the Canim)

Canim on the left, Herdbane on the right behind a Marat.

Luckily for newcomers it's now in all the books. Still not in the Kindle version though unless I'm mistaken.

It's very nice to have, especially after book one and the events start to take place everywhere else (other than just the Calderon Valley).

I'm never gonna be able to look at a chocobo the same way again. Thanks though QuickTidal. I got used copies so I don't have the maps at the front.

120 pages into Academ's Fury. Sadly I must put it on hold for a few days. tCG gets priority. Will be back to this as soon as I finish tCG.
