Karsa and Tiste Edur Magic

Why can Karsa shug off Tiste Edur magic when the Edur mage in the boat attacks him. We know he rubs otataral on his skin, but that does not have any effect on elder magic.

Karsa does not believe that magic can stop him and so it doesn't. Mind over magic. Also he has warrens and stuff.

Basically you need to read on to find out the full reveal. Midnight Tides explains who is the Edur master and The Bonehunters will mention why the Edur's warren is vulnerable to Otataral.

And if you're wondering where the otartaral is coming from, well there's a vein of it in the Teblor homeland which they use to make blood oil from.
Here is a series that will for ever inspire me. Not only as a writer, but as a person. Mr. Erikson has shown us both sides to the human condition. He has shown even the lost, the destitute, the forgotten and unwitnessed can triumph.

Karsa is too much of a badass for magic to have any effect on him. Also, the blood oil that he ingests.

Not this again. I thought it was discussed before. The comment Aramala makes " Ignorance honed in a weapon" refeers to him not knowing what would happen if he lifted the stone , thus not caring, thus doing it anyway.
It's Karsa's personal warren and the otataral he ingested as blood-oil that makes him resilient to magic. As Heboric told Shaik KE is a shattered warren contamined by Rashan and Meanas and so vulnerable to magic.

Call it a personal warren or call it the power of unbelief. Same difference.

No, it's a personal warren forming his Fuck You field. It doesn't spontaneously vanish when he encounters someone obviously using magic on him.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I'm pretty sure that it is said, after Karsa confronts the Edur. That the warren of the Toblakai was one of those unleashed on the ship. So if someone could find that passage, then we have confirmation.

^^^ About midpoint of Ch. 3 (HOC, Tor edition, starting at the bottom of pg. 206)
Quote
Two steps down, into a wide galley with a wooden table in its centre. A second doorway at the opposite end, a narrow passage beyond, lined by berths, then an ornate door that squealed as Karsa shoved it aside.
Four attackers, a fury of blows exchanged, Karsa blocking with the harpoon and counter-attacking with the bloodsword. In moments, four broken bodies dying on the cabin's gleaming wooden floor. A fifth figure, seated in a chair on the other side of the room, hands raised, sorcery swirling into the air.
With a snarl, Karsa surged forward. The magic flashed, sputtered, then the harpoon's point punched into the figure's chest, tore through and drove into the chair's wood backing. A look of disbelief frozen on the grey face, eyes locking with Karsa's own one last time, before all life left them.
'Urugal! Witness a Teblor's rage!'
Silence following his ringing words, then the slow pat of blood dripping from the sorcerer's chair onto the rug. Something cold rippled through Karsa, the breath of someone unknown, nameless, but filled with rage. Growling, he shrugged it off, then looked around. High-ceilinged for lowlanders, the ship's cabin was all of the same black wood. Oil lanterns glimmered from sconces on the walls. On the table were maps and charts, the drawings on them illegible as far as the Teblor was concerned.

Hmmmm..... reading that it remains possible that the Crippled God might just have decided to spare Karsa over the as of this book, unnamed mage.
But, the quote I mean is probably actually earlier since Karsa appears in earlier books.
I reckon it must have been Kulp who mentioned a Toblakai warren.

wasnt it either kulp or the imass bonecaster who meet up on the silanda who mentions a list of warren residues and that toblakai was one of them?

Yes, this is the case. Thus, it's Karsa's warren that makes him impervious. What other effect could have had a cause on that ship that would be Toblakai magic?
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

doesnt mean thats what made him impervious, just that it was in effect. if you carry a radio active isotope, you will leave a trace where ever you go. doesnt mean that it does anything good for you
I lean in favour of the Otataral in the blood oil theory joined with the fact KE is a piss poor warren

So, what did the Toblakai warren accomplish? Would a residue be left behind if there was no use of it?

it just emanates from him, maybe when he gets violent it increases his abilities ( he was considered talented even for the other telbor, and that was before he went on his fantastical voyage)
without some information about other toblakai get attacked by magic and who dont use blood oil we wont know for sure

The point I'm making is that you don't include a shotgun on the shelf in the description of the room when you are telling the story unless you plan to use it.

your right, but you dont use a sawn off shotgun to block bullets
theres nothing that proves that karsa uses his innate warren to block other magic, and it seams unlikly that he has blood oil for the younger warrens and his own personal toblakai anti elder warren
