In Dod on page 51 of the Bantam books, Bugg is preparing to defend Seren Pedac's baby from Fiddler's Deck reading.
He explains who Pinosel and Ursto Hoobutt are, claiming they are the gods of Wine and Beer, and then further explaining how they are 'elemental forces in human history' including a plethora of other ancient pantheon gods, including:
- animal husbandry (?)
- first tools of stone
- bone and antler
- birth of music
- birth of dance
- birth of telling of tales
- art on stone walls
- art on skin
We all know Fisher is the world's greatest poet.
We also know, from TtH, that he has ascendant-like abilities in intuition and strength, if not stealth as well. And ability to remain in the company of Kruppe.
If nothing more... could not Fisher by the ancient elemental 'Telling of Tales' in some way?
What about Grumble the Toad and the Malazan artist from books 3 and 6? Elemental dieties of 'Art on Stone Walls'? Somehow? I know they do canvass but... progression?
Or am I making too much of this brief explanation? Is it just meant to explain Ursto and Hoobutt (from book 7 where they were last seen, am I right?) so their characters make sense?

It's not meant to be a list of roles we can assign known characters to, besides perhaps Fisher. Ormologun and Gumble are pretty neat, but the "stone walls" probably refers to caves in my opinion. That said, doesn't someone paint a giant mural on a wall in Letheras as the Errant watches (MT or RG)? Besides all that, I mean, I believe Mael knows what he's talking about in terms of the gods/patrons of human developments.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I immediately thought of Fisher when he mentioned telling of tales, it fits perfectly. I have no argument with this, as for the rest I don't think we have seen any of them. Its a bit of a stretch thinking about the painters although they do act in a way that fits with Pinosel and Ursto Hoobutt.
I think you are right, with the Fisher Tel Kath anyway.

First of all, good job spotting that.
It opens up an interesting line of thinking about all the mysterious human characters out there.
Ruthan Gudd is the ancient human god of beards.
