What is this, I don't even... Can this even be classified as music?

Does anyone know if this was supposed to sound like this or if there was some problem between the audio in the arena and the audio going out to the televisions?

Because this sounds bad. Really bad.

Also, I would like to see Axel Rose punch out Fergie after what she just did.

Maybe that's just what it sounds like without auto-tune (which I presume is hard to do live)?

Isn't auto tune just a filter? I know you can download an autotune app that transforms your voice into autotune when you speak into it. Surely the professionals have the same capabilities.

It just sounded like everything was a little off. The music was drowned out by their terrible vocals and their choreography was like watching a parkinsons patient performing the robot.

My god, this is the best Black Eyed Peas performance I've ever seen! Fergie didn't even wet herself this time!
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Blame Janet Jackson and her breasts for ruining half-time shows at the SB for the foreseeable future.

Actually, blame half-time shows that aren't gimmicky and simple entertainment for ruining themselves. Who tunes in to watch the half-time show, and if you do, why not just go to Youtube or another video site?
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Can anyone tell me why Fergie is regarded as some sort of sex symbol by... well, anyone? I mean, her body's alright, and her face is alright, although nothing special by everyday standards, let alone airbrushed celebrity standards, but that wouldn't really matter if she had the charisma and moves.
But she doesn't. She dances like an arthiritic hippo and if she's got a personality it never comes across in anything I've seen her in.

And, clearly, she doesn't sing very well. Never thought I'd see the day when I had sympathy for Axel Rose.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Personally I never care about the halftime show and knowing the Black Eyed Peas were "performing" I can't say I'm surprised at all other than I actually watched it but that was mainly because I was trying to focus on anything but the conversations that the people I watched the game were having. At least it's not a marching band and when watching or at football games live I just wish I could fastforward to get to the second half.

Fergie is the classic "Butterface" woman.

Super Bowl halftime shows should be scrapped (or limited to a marching band) and the commercials cut in half.

I'll be honest. I was excited when I heard that the black eyed peas were going to be performing. They were the first group to do a half time show since Janet that I even gave to craps about, excepting Prince of course. I really do like the peas. I have a lot of thier songs on my MP3 at work and listen to them all the time.

Their sound sucked horribly for the show. The vocals completly drowned out the music and the bass and I felt the light brite dancers were off putting. The two best things to me were when Slash came up playing sweet child o mine, even though Fergie butchered it, and when Usher came down, even though he really didn't sing to much just did a little dancing.

I will say at least the performers were relevent to todays music. Better, IMO, then the old people that have been performing.

The Peas were once a nice, slightly poppy funky niche in the hiphop/rap scene. And then Ferfie came along, and they did something with Justin Timberlake, and they went from niche to mainstream. Look at them in that vid.... all show, no substance. I honestly don't understand why they went for music with rap in it, anyway - it seldom goes well live, there are ALWAYS issues, I think mostly due to the bass used. (Unless you're Chuck D and can just outshout everyone in the motherfucking stadium, including what your sound technician can bring with him - massive respect to that man).

For a stadium concert, even if it is just a ten min show, a classic 4/5 man band rocking the house is the way to go. It has worked for decades, why not continue that way? Plenty of good performers everyone wants to see, too, if only because there are always one or two oldies looking for a comeback.... and Dave Grohl and Josh Homme have one or two new projects each year if you really get desperate.

That being said, I want Prince to do it.
Failing that, Iron Maiden.

@ Moridin: why should the performer be relevant? I think it is more about giving everybody what they want: a good time.
If not, then we should have had Katy Perry up there. With a boob cam.

Ugh. There were some people I was watching the Superbowl with who thought the Black Eyed Peas were one of the best bits of the night. I nearly killed all of them...

@ Tapper - maybe I misunderstood you, but Prince played a few years back. He had lots of sound and technical problems.

@ moridin - "Relevant to today's music" and "old people that have been performing...." That makes me want to cringe. Just because the Black Eyed Peas dress up in space suits, have Rolling Stone covers and albums on the charts doesn't make them good.

Whether or not you're a fan of the band (I'm not - and the lead singer's a wanker) you can't deny that this performance by "old people" is both relevant, and supremely better than the Black Eyed Peas. Or Janet Jackson. Most Superbowl halftime shows, actually.

@Ciceronian. You get rep partly because of the last thing you said. But mostly because of your avatar.

I'm trying to figure out why the halftime show committee decided that 13 year old girls were their prime audience for the show.

The last 3 years were awesome (Tom Petty, Springsteen, The Who) then they come with this shit?

Superbowl halftime committee, I dont know who you are or if you really exist, but you blew it.

I would have liked to see Axel Rose come out and hurl a beer bottle at Fergie's face when she started sing "Sweet Child."
Lost a lot of love for Slash.

What the hell was that?
Why should I infect them with my rage?

That was weird. The Peas are pretty well-known for not being able to hack it live, especially will.i.am who just sounds horrendous away from his vocal equipment and autotune. They've put out some good records (and some ones that are utterly horrific) and made some vaguely entertaining videos but not much more than that. If they wanted to put a 'relevant' act on, even rap acts, there's a lot more appropriate choices.
