I liked starting as a deprived, the stats are pretty good, as is the plank shield you start with.
I got right up to Havel through the Undead Burg before I put on any armor.

I have just finished Catacombs. I thought Pinwheel was easy. I have an awesome sword which is very light but hits 280+ damage a go.
I went into the Tomb of the Giants and fell off. I saved it then and will go back to it.
On the subject of weapons, why did no one tell me how crap the moonlight butterfly mixed with +10 spear is? Am I using it wrong? I used two demon souls to upgrade it a bit more but I think it is very bad.
I am using a Divine Club at the moment but I want to upgrade this sword to something great.
Someone want to explain upgrading the weapons to me?
At the moment I have upgraded, axe, scythe, sniper crossbow, notched whip, Black Knight Sword, SILVER KNIGHT STRAIGHT SWORD, Iaito
All of these upgraded to +5 then made raw and +5 again.
I also have the Moonlight Spear which I regret.

Going RAW isn't usually a good idea damage wise. It usually is weaker than lightning, fire, chaos or normal upgrades.
I suggest lightning for a couple long range weapons and fire or chaos for medium things.
Moonlight spear isn't incredible, but it's pretty good and fast. Try two handing it sometimes against opponents who hide behind shields.

I don't know how to upgrade it. This is what I am asking. How do I upgrade it to a fire sword or something?

You give the embers you collect to certain blacksmiths. There's Andre under the bonfire that's near Sen's Fortress and Darkroot, there's the guy who's in self-imposed jail in the beginning of New Londo Ruins just outside the elevator down from Firelink, there's the giant guy in Anor Londo and there's someone in the Catacombs. There might be another one somewhere, but I forget right now.
Basically, explore every area you can to the fullest, grab every shining light item you can figure out how to and so on. I actually am having trouble with doing this inside the Great Hollow and Ash Lake, but hey, this is Dark Souls.

I have got all the blacksmith's. How do you upgrade a weapon with the elements though?

Each Smith will only take a specific Ember type from you. The Embers are essential, and while one will do for the lower level stuff, you will need to collect the Large Embers to create the best weapons and armor.
To get the 'modify' options in the first place, you have to first upgrade a regular weapon to a certain level. So if you upgrade a spear to a +5, it will now appear in the 'modify weapon' menus for the other elements. (The best stuff needs to be a +10 before the weapon will even appear in the menu though).
So, when a spear reaches +5, you can either continue upgrading to a +6 etc, or turn it into a Divine/Magic etc weapon in the modify menu. It will appear in the upgrade menu again to be upgraded with whichever titanite is specific to that type, like green if you want a divine spear.
If you upgrade to +10, AND have a Boss Soul, new weapon/armor options will appear. Like if you upgrade any curved sword to +10, and are carrying Quelaags Soul, you will get the option to upgrade it to the Furysword. If you have a +10 shield and a +10 sword, and have Sif's Soul, you can choose either the GreatShield of Artorias, or the Greatsword of Artorias, but not both as you only have one Soul until newgame+.
It's pretty easy really. First upgrade using titanite; then modify using the right Ember/Smith; then upgrade again using type specific titanite. To get the +10 of anything you will need a slab though I think, and they are not easily found. Also, lots of the best weapons will go to a +5 once forged, and usually use Demon Titanite to enhance, which is also rare, so take care not to start a few weapons at that level - stick to one or two.

I haven't had an option of upgrading to level 6. When I reach level 5 it always let's me go to the raw level or none. So what do I need to get and where from?

Have you found the Large Ember yet?I think it's in the Depths. You need to give it to Andre.

Be sure that you're
1) Talking to the correct blacksmith
2) Have the embers for the upgrade you want
3) Toggle over on the weapon ascension screen. You won't see all upgrades when you first pull it up, just the ones for a specific category (such as Raw)

I still am not really great at this. Where are the best places to farm for titanite? What do I need to have? The covetous ring that boosts discovery, does being human/hollow affect what you find, how about humanity?
progressing the game wise, I have done the catacombs, tomb of the giants, and most of the dukes archives, right now I am trying to do the crystal cave, but I have went backwards to try upgrading my Flamberge Sword into a heavy flame hitter so that the Gollums get hurt better.
I don't know where I am going yet. I'd like to create the sword that kills ghosts because I know I will have to go down there soon enough. Quickest way for me to build that sword? I am 80 hours into this game now

Best places to farm titanite shards are among the Balder Knights in the church. Large titanite and green titanite is found in the goo balls in the Depths, which is also a good spot to farm humanity from the rats. There is a spot in the Crystal Cave where twinkling titanite can be farmed, but you are not there yet.
Being human ups your item finding and having up to twn humanity in your meter ups it too. There are diminishing returns after two humanity in the counter. The gold ring ups item finding hugely also.
So the easiest set up is to go human, have two humanity and wear the gold ring.
As for the ghost killings, do you want just a sword that can touch the ghosts or do you want to be able to block and attack them for temporary bursts? There is a consumable item that lets you block, attack and interact with ghosts for a short time and you can buy a bunch too get through that zone.
I built the sword though.

I know about the Transient Curse. I want the fastest way to build the sword though. I have the Soul. I just need to know what sword I need to do it, where I get it from, how many and what type of titanite I need to max it tp +10, then once I do get it to plus 10, what I need to make the final leap into Ghost killing.

Yeah, just level up a dagger or sword to ten and use the soul. don't use a broken sword and save your demon titanite for this. only goes up to five though.

Way cheaper to use the transient curses. If you take 4 or 5, and have a high discovery/humanity, the ghosts will drop more as you go.
Those ghosts ambush through walls in narrow corridors - its way better to be able to switch to a spear, rather than bounce a sword off the walls.
Plus you get to make the Greatshield of Artorias instead.

new londo ruins + four kings = not easy
I decided to do it without the witch lady because she just doesn't pack enough punch to make up for the increased difficulty. Got through, but it was close.
I haven't played the game for a couple weeks now. Will get back into it to make the push through the DLC and then the final boss. I quit because I was getting pwnt by a couple common enemies in the DLC and needed to go level up my clubs so I don't get so pwnt the next time.

Bought this in the Steam sale and been playing for a few days now. Was a bit sceptical when I bought it as I'm very far from being a power gamer, but you people had given it such good reviews I'd figured I give it a try. And so I became convinced that you are all mad, power-gaming sadists and this game is broken. When I realised that you shouldn't romp directly to the catacombs, that conviction eased a bit. It gained strength again when I tried to take down those Bell Gargoyles with my first character. After reading a little bit on the game's wikis, I've started over again with a pyromancer. I also decided not to kill the undead merchant and rather buy the bow off him so I could get that Drake sword. All of the sudden the game is loads easier, but the thought that I'm still at the very beginning of the game makes me despondent.
Quick question: I've got that thing that upgrades the Zac Efron flask at the mute womans cage - should I do it or should I save the thing for something better later? Or, to ask that question in more general terms, should I upgrade weapons and armour and stuff now (low lever gear mostly) or should I wait until I get proper gear? This game's a bit stingy on the upgrade drops, it seems.

Are you me? I literally did everything you did except for xbox. Started with a pyro, died a bit (especially to high level invasions which sucks), and then killed some bosses. I just took down the moonlight butterfly in 1 shot with the awesome combo of fire and the drake sword, and I am definitely enjoying the game.
