I think he just described the structure of every book since, well, at least Midnight Tides.
The book has a strong opening of some 1-200 pages where all kinds of new characters are thrown in while old characters pop up and begin a new adventure/some kind of depressing missery. Then a lot of travel, revelations and build up goes on for 400-500 pages and then you have an awesome 100-200 page conclusion.
It's been like this with most of them.
I also think that it is why people like books Memories of Ice, Deadhouse Gates, Bonehunters more, because there are big clashes all the way through the books and not just at the ending.

Hey, not all of the people prefer those books. I prefer the House Of Chains/Midnight Tides style of books myself. Where there is action throughout the book, but not massive scale until the end.

To be honest, I don't really care all that much about what other reviewers think about it. I've enjoyed every book immensely pretty much from start to finish, and I really don't see that changing anytime soon. Even if it does I would rather be disappointed as I read it rather than let reviews affect how I approach the book.

This whole discussion around what constitutes setup vs. action, disappointment that tCG isn't 900 pages of dragon fights and coruscating sorcery, etc is really wearing on me. How is reading the "setup" any less enjoyable than reading the convergence at the end? If you've stuck with the books this far, don't you enjoy the characters and the writing for their own sake, regardless of whether or not they're super active every time they're on the page?
Case in point, the 10 page preview on Tor... That's all set up. Regardless, is it not still super exciting and compelling to read?

I can understand (but don't agree with) some people disliking the setup of MT, since it is all new characters, but with DoD or TCG, where it is all known characters showing up how can the setup not excite you? It's not hundreds of pages of battles, but it IS hundreds of pages of "Oh man, Grizzin Farl just showed up with a sword made of bacon, a shield made of waffles, his beard is shooting lazer beams and he's pissed the fuck off!" All the characters and storylines are built up to such epic proportions by now that the mere mention of them are spine-chilling.

I don't see anything in that link you sent that relates to TCG - as far as I can tell this only refers to his reading of DoD?

? At the top he says "So, I spent most of Christmas, and all of January plowing through both Dust of Dreams and The Crippled God."
He also makes some spoiler free mentions to tCG, in particular some bits where some of the meaning behind the series title, "Book of the Fallen," is elucidated some, which got me thinking...
Edit: I just realized, Hetan, you were talking about the first link EoDO posted. Woops.

Pissed. I got the impression this guy was like "Oh, ho hum, just got a copy of tCG, ho-hum", when the rest of us would kill for it. Doesn't he know what he's holding??? (Runs screaming into the street)

I got the EXACT same vibe. When he said he got an advance copy but OOPS hadn't read Dust of Dreams yet, I wanted to pull my hair out. This ultimately speaks more to the degree of sickness imbued by my anticipation than to any fault on the part of the reviewer.

Not a review just my opinion in short... I'm absolutely blown away by it. The end of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, as epic now as when it started, just more so.
I started reading the Malazan series while waiting for Dance of Dragons, which I still do
, but in the end... the Malazan series may even be trump A Song of Ice and Fire. Martin's books are fantastic and I wouldn't miss them for the world but Erikson.... wow. I can't say I grew as attached to even one or two characters in the Song of Ice and Fire as I did do nearly all the main characters in the Malazan series. I'm still so overwhelmed by The Crippled God, it was truly the fitting end to this epic series.
I'm incredibly sad that the "main" series is now over, the characters have reached the end of their stories, it's .... done. No new Malazan novel to look forward to in the coming years... makes me sort of dread the end of A Song of Ice and Fire, whenever that'll happen.
Fortunately there are still all the Esslemont novels set in this universe, of which so far I've only read Night of Knives. Just seeing the Return of the Crimson Guard referenced once in The Crippled God... I'll just have to read them all
, even though I prefer Erikson to Esslemont. And this talk of an epilogue book by Esslemont, supposedly set after the end of TCG... can't wait for it. Many storylines have been wrapped up, finished (some, very few, of them possibly a bit ... hurried) but a few are still open so I'll look forward to reading up on those and stay in the Malazan world just a little bit longer.
Darn, tearing up again, over and out.
