This. Also, Sha'ik's foot looks a little weird to me.
I actually just read this scene (like 5 minutes ago

) and the level of detail you captured is incredible. I love the ears on Karsa's belt.
Though, for a minute, I was trying to figure out why there was blood gushing from Sha'ik's back when she got shot in the head... the I realized that's her cloak.
Great work, overall.
Weird, how?
Ah yes, I was a bit worried about the cloak thing, but it seems to have worked out. I was very inspired by the art of Lauren K. Cannon when i painted this:)
and thank you...the ears were fun to paint, hehe.

I know that Karsa is supposed to be massive, but I still feel like the character sizes don't match up.
This was perhaps the hardest part of the painting, so it's not weird if they don't match up. Most pictures of Karsa have him exagerrated to unbelievable sizes, and I just decided to go in a different direction so that he'd fit inside the painting:P His size is based on a picture I have of me standing next to a guy who's 6ft7" (I'm 5ft4").

It's a beauty
For some reason I seem to focus on either Shaik and the background (which is amazing) or Karsa and Leoman, almost as if Shaiks reality or existence is different from theirs. I don't know if this was intended or not but I really like it.
Thank you!
I know I tried to achieve something by placing them as I did, testing out some rules regarding composition and such. Judging by your comment I must have succeeded, at least a little, hehe.
Glad you like the background, took me quite a while since I tried to portray a desert sky at dawn, without painting the sun, which is actually on the opposite side of the sky, sort of. It was also a nice way to introduce some more colour into the painting, and further the whole desert-feel:)

It's artistic foreshadowing!
10 points to D'rekindor!

Like! esp good work with Shaik, the wrappings are a nice detail.
If I was going to be nitpicky, Karsa looks too nice and Leoman is supposed to have a beard. I' ve wondered more than once how he carries those flails and i like your take on it.
Nice...like a sabretooth tiger!
He's still quite "young" at this moment in malazan time, and I sorta tried to capture that. If I paint him again, he'll look meaner, I promise:)
Also, what Spechtre said...

Very nice! One criticism I have are the tattoos on Karsa's face, iirc they were described as a jig saw puzzle. The painting suggests a vascular (veiny) face instead of burly (jagged) tattoos that he endured while a slave.
Thanks!
Yeah, I chalk that up to artistic licence...I wanted more "broken glass" than "jigsaw"

very nice! really get the feel of imminence bleeding out of it.
although karsa does look like he's about to sit down for tea.
"I say, good chap, observe as I toddle off and decapitate this dastardly deragoth!"
still an amazing piece

OMG, whenever Karsa speaks in the books now, he'll have a posh British accent!
I thought he seemed quite relaxed (outwardly at least) when I read the descriptions from that particular scene in DG, but we all know better than to be fooled by his appearance...we know what he is capable of. We have "witnessed" him in action. So I kinda liked the idea of him not looking too threatening at all, just a hint of menace here and there, like the ears on his belt, the veins on his arms and such.
And thanks, I'm glad you do. That was totally the feeling i was going for
Things and stuffs...and other important objects.
