Okay I am only half way through the books, so I probably shouldn't even be in this forum, but I have to say that Manask is perhaps the most absurd character to appear in the Malazan universe to date.

Each book seems to have their comedy teams. And even though much of the usual humor has been suppressed in the book so far, these two - Ipshank and Manask - make for a highly entertaining duo.

I wonder what kind of a creature Manask is supposed to be. He's the size of a big Toblakai or maybe a very tall Trell? Seems to be wearing something akin to Moranth armor. He isn't bothered by getting stabbed with knives. What is he? Something new perhaps.

I absolutely loved Manask in this book, had me laughing almost every time he appeared...

Pretty much summing it up...

"Now watch why I stealthily scout around..."
"HELLO, ANYBODY THERE?"

As for what he is, I imagine him to be a human... just a very rough around the edges human... the descriptive writing for him reminded me of Ferrule...

Or maybe a Human/mix...

at one point, suth looks over at manask and his shredded armour and notes that the man seems to be much smaller underneath his armor than one would expect. i think he's a regular human, and that his armor is what's special, however that may be.

that being said:

Since you've not finished the book, I'll put this in spoilers

Spoiler

I have to say the appearance of ipshank and manask has to be the moment I most looked forward to in this book, after the references to Ipshank and Manask in the previous books. From those references to the 'last flight of manask' i expected manask to be a dragon or bird soletaken rather than a thief on the run!

They were pretty minor mentions, I'm not surprised you missed them.

I don't have my books with me right now, but as I recall it's at the start of maybe the 2nd or 3rd book of MOI (third I think), where theres a little history excerpt which mentions ipshank of koreli, the last destriant of fener, who disappeared during the last flight of manask on the stratem icefields. One of those cryptic histories which hints at so much more which I've always wanted to know more about.

I seem to remember another little section linking greymane and ipshank, but I can't think where it would have been. Could have been RotCG or the BH.

Quote

The Last Mortal Sword of Fener’s Reve was Fanald

of Cawn Vor, who was killed in the Chaining. The

last Boar-cloaked Destriant was Ipshank of Korelri,

who vanished during the Last Flight of Manask on

the Stratem Icefields. Another waited to claim that

title, but was cast out from the temple before it

came to him, and that man’s name has been stricken

from all records. It is known, however, that he was

from Unta; that he had begun his days as a cutpurse

living on its foul streets, and that his casting out

from the temple was marked by the singular

punishment of Fener’s Reve . . .

I believe Ipshank is also mentioned by Quick Ben or somebody else in MOI when referring to the fact that as far as it is known the Cult of Fener hadn't had a real MS, Des, or SA since the old ones disappeared.

And Noto Boil talks about serving with them in BH. He also mentions that they stayed loyal right to the end.

I was a little disappointed with Ipshank due to my own expectations - the prologue makes it look like he's converted to worshipping the CG,

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.
