I could help as a mentor for a couple of turns and random questions, if need be, but won't do any negotiating or whatnot.

I have plenty of spare time on my hands at the moment... I was thinking of finally making a Malazan variant for Diplomacy. The one thing I'm really not sure about though is what map to use - how much should it cover? Personally I was thinking of the Letherii continent pre-Midnight Tides. That way we've got Letherii, Edur, Bolkando, K'Chain Che'Malle, Forkrul Assail, maybe an Italy-weak Toblakai nation...

Thoughts?

Sounds like a great idea.

You could do a Seven Cities one pre-Malazan (or in an alternate universe with a successful Whirlwind with Malazans holding Aren and its surrounds) and have the tribes vying for territory. There's plenty of factions to go round there.

Seven cities would be awesome. I agree.

The problem I have with 7 cities is that it's one giant lump of land, very little geographical interestingness, which could lead to carnage due to the lack of any sort of natural defences for anyone. But it seems a much more popular idea so we'll have a look.

Is there something wrong with total carnage? ;) You make a good point though. The people between Ubaryd and Aren and Otataral Island are the only people you could give true natural defences. With Vathar Forest and the mountains to the north, Clatar Sea to the west and the Dojal Hading Sea to the east, it'd be almost impossible to take Aren by land from the north.

Looking at Nagrom's map of Lether I'm really liking it as a setting, way more than Seven Cities.

Factions could be:
- Lether
- Bluerose
- Bolkando
- Saphinand
- Korshenn/T'roos/Pilott/Descent (peninsula south of Dracons Sea)
- Truce/Karn (east Dracons Sea)

The Tiste I think initially occupy too little land to be feasible, a province at best.

It looks fairly balanced at first glance. Bluerose basically has a natural wall of mountains around its starting point, Lether has a swath of land to the east of Lether (think Russia) before hitting Bluerose in the east and the southern nations. They'll probably have the most land but also a lot of coast to cover as well. Naval combat would be crucial for every nation but Bluerose and the Saphii. There's lots of mountains and choke points like to the west of the Kryn delta and the Pokeface Islands to make things interesting too.

I don't think Quon Tali is viable as a setting, nor is Genabackis. Korel might be, but it would be much more naval based than land based, like Colonial but without anything remotely like the land wars of China and Russia.

Anyway, before I saw MTS's post, I made a basic map of Seven Cities - it's not quite as bad as I had thought, but see what you think...

This game looks a bit interesting. I'm not sure how this is played so I wouldn't mind teaming up with a vetern to get the feel for this but I'm willing to get thrown to the wolves if you need another player.
I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.
