I'm just one of those types that takes the literal words as absolute canon.

might wanna break that habit. nobody's opinion is absolute canon in these books. many people deliberately mislead, many people are misinformed and many people are just plain old talkin' out their arses.
There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line.

See the post 'Message from Steven Erikson' - http://forum.malazan...showtopic=19675 (also in the GoTM forum)

Take some opening scenes in Gardens as examples, and see how they relate to subsequent scenes for those select characters. Whiskeyjack and Fiddler on Mock's Hold: high above a burning city, in a place of power.

People do not generally mislead, unless it leads to epic-series spoilers.

Most people are well-informed in the general, but lacking in the specific, excepting those on concurrent re-reads.

It is not quite fair to assume we're all out of touch.

That being said, the series is rife with what we like to call GOTMisms, which are canon-breaking points in the first book (perhaps even the second).

But given that Sinisdar was talking about characters in the book and not posters on these forums, he's pretty accurate.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.
