Just started reading HoC and am LOVING IT!!!
I am 98 pages into it but have a question about Forkassal who was just freed by the 3 warriors in the mountains
it says icarium and the tlan imass locked her behind the stone years ago......does this occur in Deadhouse Gates>????? I cant remember this event....or is this another one of Eriksons curve balls he throws into the mix??
How does HoC rank compared to the previous 3 books??
Thanks.....hope you are all enjoying the Malazan epic

Curve ball. An interesting as hell one, at that.
I'd rank it at 3, but well, that's still saying something.

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Don't worry, you haven't missed anything - we haven't seen Calm before in the series, it's another SE reference to an off-screen event waaaay back that helps build up some background knowledge to the world. Little titbits like this will help you enjoy and make sense of the rest of the series, so tuck it away in the back of your mind ready to pull out later....
Personally, I find HoC to be one of my favourites - I love the Karsa storyline, and he develops into an absolutely awesome character - I'm sure you'll enjoy the rest of it!

The events that lead to Calms imprisonment happened thousands and thousands of years ago. Probably way into the Elder Ages. We're talking the days before the First Empire and the Fall of the Crippled God.
As for how the books ranks. To many it was a controversial book because the first part (Book 1) only revolves around the Karsa character which was a new approach and many didn't like the change or reading about a barbarian rapist with a superiority complex.
Personally I loved the Karsa storyline and the story really picks up when it returns to the story of the Malazan Army.
And keep in mind that a lot of the events in the books are actually setting the stage for important events later on. There's a ton of stuff that wont make sense before you read the later books.
