Whilst my Ellis fanboy credentials are fairly solid, I had a conversation in my local comic shop earlier this week that throws them into quite sharp contrast.

Ellis FanBoy: "Ellis has totally re-invented the comic format with Freakangels!"

Me: "Really? I've never read it. How so?"

EFB: "Ongoing series with six pages delivered weekly. It combines the advantages of episodic storytelling with those of the long form Graphic Novel. Genius!"

Me: "I hate to piss on your bonfire, but isn't that what 2000AD has done for the last 30-odd years?"

EFB: "..."

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. I could be wrong, but iirc Ellis was trying to take a 200AD approach.

The truly interesting thing about Freakangels is that it appears that altho he's giving it away for free, people are still happy to pay dollars for the print version. or even not read it online until the next print tpb is released.

that is a little shocking, but the artwork is so rich that getting a hard copy would be quite appealing.

Goes to show that with a sufficiently quality product there remains a market for printed work. he is working with a talented artist, which doesn't hurt.

And yeah, i'm utterly psyched to see what he does next. He's setting up developments SO well it's just sick.

- Abyss, glad you liked.

I buy it. I'd rather pay 10 bucks and be able to read it at my leisure on a bus, in bed, etc, and I much prefer having a paper copy, as too much reading on the computer is beginning to hurt my eyes.

I suspect he's banking (quite literally :)) on that...

I'll defo be buying paper copies of FreakAngels at some point, I like doing rereads and the computer makes it a bit of a hassle.

Got to say, the pace is picking up just a little now. Not that I disliked the slow pacing (I mean, I like Gunnerkrigg Court, anything else is hectic in comparison), but the current piling up of developments is great.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

Last page of today's FREAKANGELS = Win. Even when you know it's coming, when all signs point to it, when it just makes sense, when the 'on screen' character basically throws in a line that is glaringly set up for what comes next...
Pure. Ellis. Win.

In other news i've been glancing at some of his Wired UK writing, and yes, i do agree that someone should give him $8k for a death ray.

Warren Ellis said:

In an interesting world, all porn stars would moonlight as contract killers, ramming strap-ons into the hearts of the evil.
On the other hand, no-one needs the possibility of Ron Jeremy breaking into their place with a strap-on at midnight.

'Strap-Ons At Midnight' No one knows what evil lurks within the hearts of men better than porn star Ron Jeremy... and he's going to stab it with a ten-inch dildo held in place by spiked leather straps. A new novel by famed comics writer and internet jesus-clone-upgrade Warren Ellis.

In other Ellis-news, this week's FREAKANGELS...

Seriously, this story is SO GOOD.

Apparently Ellis is well-known within the industry for writing for his artists- ie, he has a good brain for knowing what an artist will be able to make look amazing and what he'll struggle with and writes accordingly. The fact that Bryan Hitch and Ben Templesmith are both better (imo) in their work with Ellis than with anything else I've read of theirs - and even Cassaday, though he's not really better than elsewhere, gets to show off a lot more than usual on Planetary - seems to bear that out.

So it wouldn't surprise me at all if Ellis came up with that sequence specifically because Duffield has a style that suits it. I mean, how many artists could really pull off the last episode as well as Duffield has done?

TBH, I thought the art in this instance really, really made the narrative. You literally couldn't have attempted it without this kind of art to back it up. It does astound, the art-writing coordination.

Seriously. There are any number or truly talented comics artists (Romita, Lee and a few others come to mind) who could not have pulled this off... essentially twelve pages of one character talking to the audience... Hell, i'm not sure Peres could have pulled this off... and it's rivetting.

And a little gross.

And hysterical.

- Abyss, fucking loves this comic.
