In GOTM I had the impression that Caladan Brood was working for Anomander Rake. However in Memories of Ice Caladan is clearley in control and Anomander Rake is his ace in the hole. Im only about 200 pages into MOI so maybe this is revealed about the swap in the leadership role or did I just misread someplace.

They treat each other as equals. You'll see more of this a bit later.

best way to describe them is co-workers with a large helping of mutual respect

I think it would be fair to say that many things in GoTM can be misleading ! Concerning Brood and Rake I think it would be better to view them as equally powerful allies with a mutual respect for each other.

Edit Triple cross post FTW !

Now all the friends that you knew in school they used to be so cool, now they just bore you.
Just look at em' now, already pullin' the plow. So quick to take to grain, like some old mule.

Yeah, equal. In GOTM, Rake was the warlord and organizing the action--it was, in a sense, Rake's fight, with Brood helping Rake out.
Split my brain into two parts: LEFT and RIGHT. Unfortunately, in my RIGHT, there's nothing left. And, in my LEFT, there's nothing right.

Yeah they are like great partners, since they've been working together for so long. They don't spend a lot of time together though as Rake is a solitary type of person whereas Brood is kind of the opposite.

No, they don't spend a lot of time together because two powers of that magnitude cannot occupy the same space for long without causing problems, no matter how long they've been working together, friends, allies or whatever.

That, and they have other things to do, of course. :p
