Good news everyone!

A friend of mine has finished my copy of MoI, and he asked me if I remembered who it was that Paran accidentally blesses. I knew the passage he meant, but I couldn't remember who it was either, and it has been nagging me ever since. Could someone help me out with this?

I can't quite recall his name but I think it may be Cafal or something like that. It's at the dig where they were uncovering the ancient canoes of the Barghast. The shaman guy has a talk with Paran about responsibility and other manly stuff and Paran, off hand, says some thing along the lines of "you have my blessing" which staggers the guy. To be honest I seem to recall the blessing was directed at the Spirits not the shaman.

Later on he also blesses the entombed Bridge Burners.

Thanks! I had searched my eBook for 'bless' and 'blesses', but not 'blessing'. Pfff. Anyway, Ganoes accidentally blesses the new Destriant of the Grey Swords:

Quote

Paran turned towards the Malazan camp. 'Follow me,' he said.
'Sir?' she asked behind him.
'He [Anaster] is yours, Destriant. With my blessing.'
She staggered then, against her horse, which grunted and sidestepped.
Paran spun. 'What—'
The woman righted herself, lifted a hand to her brow, then shook her head. 'I am sorry. There was… weight… to your use of that word.'
'My use - oh.'
Oh. Hood's breath, Ganoes - that was damned careless.

I always visualised that as Salieri blessing people in the hospital in Amadeus (1984).
Trust me, I'm a doctor.

actually the blessing is upon anaster, as he is the person being referred to by paran. personally i think this is why it was possible for toc to inhabit the empty shell of anaster.

Personally, I would say that Paran blesses the Destriant, visualized by her staggering against her horse. The 'weighted words' (Paran's blessing) are directed at her. Beside that, Toc is able to inhabit the empty shell of of Anaster, because Itkovian took all that was the person Anaster except his physical body.

Just my two cents :)
