What about vehicles? I wouldn't mind blasting some chaos space marines with a cadian pattern Sentinel :p

Certanly a couple of games have implemented vehicles succesfully.

From what I've seen, any situation pitching a player in a vehicle and a player without a vehicle in this setting would be grossly unbalanced... so you'd have to do mass-vehicle environments. Could be done, of course, Predator tanks and Whirlwind artillery could make for some great tactical elements, both in pvp and pve.
Then again, how do you balance a Predator or Land Speeder against a Leman Russ or some ork machines in a pvp environment? Nobody would like to be on the inferior side. Then again if a Captured Leman Russ could take on a Predator, we'd be talking drastic inaccuracies to the setting.

The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. I suppose you have a point there Gothos, and I really detest battlegrounds.

I could certainly see the various fast attack scout bikes that the space marines use being introduced as a mount, if not as an actual combat vehicle.

in the old Star Wars galaxies you could get an AT-ST as a follower. Now, certainly a Sentinel with a Lascannon or Autocannon would be a powerful NPC ally, but I suppose it could work if implemented correctly.

Gothos, when you make a mmo out from a well-fleshed out universe you will always rock the setting since the primary foundation is balance and not lore. I am pretty sure you already know this, but had to respond to

I'm aware of that. It's part of the reason why I hope that not all races will be playable. You can draw at least some parallels between Space Marines, Eldar, Chaos and Tau, but factions like Orks, Tyranids and Necrons not so much. I'd leave these out of the playable races. Then either:

1) Make Space Marines (or the Imperium in general), Craftworld Eldar and Chaos the three playable factions like in DAoC and leave the Tau out of the game;
2) Imperium, Eldar and Tau as three different "order" factions to be playable and leave Chaos out as only NPCs
3) Imperium, Chaos, Tau and Eldar as a 4-way system a'la EVE Online. But with war.
4) Roll with tradition and go into Order (Imperium, Eldar, Tau) vs Destruction (Chaos, Orks, Dark Eldar). Or Imperium/Eldar vs Chaos/Orks. Or something.

Anyway, I hope they don't just try to clone WAR.

I really hope that it won't go the "order vs. destruction" way seeing as how the imperium is just as likely to bomb the crap out of the eldar as they are out of chaos. And vice versa.

Come to think of it, Kaskrin/Stormtroopers, Ogryns and Vindicare make for some nice character classes, kinda. But it wouldn't be balanced with the others, still. Unless they took a steaming dump over the lore.

well, I suppose you could give them various abilities that the other classes don't have. Stormtroopers have deep strike teleportation assault. As does Grey Knights, but I doubt they'll be playable.

Anyway, I hope they don't do factions as it would just feel too wrong. What would be awesome however, would be a guild/company system ala eve online, where you can do whatever pleases you in the pursuit of galactic dominance. You should be restricted to race-only guilds, however implementing trade relations with other races could be a possibility.

Hmm, having written that it does seem very wrong to the lore. But who knows, might be heck of a game.

WH40K is not an individualist compliant universe. All modern MMORPGs (sadly) are largely individualist and self-interested. WH40k was a collective conflict. Not meshing well.

Anyhow, what is far more exciting is a new DoW2 expansion being announced.
Probably going to be IG, Inquisition or Sisters of Battle.

I agree that compared to the vast majority of factions in 40k, the Imperial guardsman is the weaker soldier. But wouldn't such a weakness be an incentive for cooperation?

In games such as MMOs there should of course be room for the solo player, and maybe that guardsman might not be the best one suited for that. But as discussed in the thread, sacrifices will have to be made for the sake of balance. Sure, it's not staying true to the lore, but I know of no MMO based on an IP that does not make compromises.


But a weaker choice will, in my opinon, be good for a game in terms of encouraging group play. Perhaps, at least, for the more mature player.

That doesn't mean I'd be mature if I got the option of blasting chaos space marines in a sentinel. Perhaps I'd even let loose a manic laugh...
