I like SE's ideas, his way of writing and the characters in his book, if they are related to a "style" of writing or a character in another book then fine, i'm glad the other book was there to spur SE on. I see what you mean when you say Kallor could be similar to "the strangers" charcter, Meursault, however, Kallor does have regret, he does have ambition and rage, he is a nasty pathological killer, where as, to me it seems that Meursault had either autism or asbereges or some other sort of mental health problem and to me Kallor knows what he is doing and why.

Are you suggesting that autism is a mental illness?

do you have a problem with that?

not an illness really, (your word btw), just a condition requiring understanding and acceptance

Mental problem tends to insinuate illness
Yes I do as it's completely different from a mental illness or problem. It's not a mental health problem. I have aspegers, which is a form of autism and I'm sound of mind.
It tends to be classed more as a learning difficulty as it effects people socially, i.e unable to make connections. And in other ways too.

its like me saying. Oh Freddy mercery died from some gay problem

ok, it seems were actually in agreement. i just wanted to avoid misunderstanding about autism/aspergers, being a psychology student and all.

no offense was intended, sorry if my lack of knowledge on that particular area caused any alarm, that was not my point though, my point was that Kallor is a lot different to Meursault although I can see some similarites.

They welcome the coming conflagration of slaughter, for it shall be of their own devising, and it pleases them to know that, in the midst of the enemies gathering against them, there shall be betrayal.

This is about the FA. How do they know that there will be betrayal? "it pleases them to know"
sorry if this has been brought up already

What? Wasn't Stone wielder set for Octobers?! :)

On both the chapters.indigo.ca and the amazon.ca websites, the publication date is listed as December 28 2010 :p

Woot on My birthday!

p.s.

After reading some of the SE replies, this got my attention

Quote

I elected to write, not fantasies with tragic elements, but tragedies with fantasy elements.

TCG would be a convergence, and there will be arcs for other novels after.

Kharkhanas -> TL going to First Shore; and perhaps Nimander & Co going there.

The Assail -> Sounds like the retreat of the FA after TCG, and most likely Silverfox and Tool. So perhaps Silverfox and Tool are not needed for the TGC, and just the defeat of the FA is all that is needed for this arc.

The only thing that seemed not accounted for in future books in Darujhistan, Toblakai, and Stonewielder are:

ED & Otataral Dragon
the dying Azath.
Draconus & Pung with his dragon related armor/weapon
Silchas and co.
and
Malazan army composing of Paran's, BH, and the KCCMs.

SE answering various questions...

Ganoesail: oddly enough, I can give you an answer on my favourite character. Tavore. And just the thought of her brings water to my eyes -- you'll know why, I hope, come the release of The Crippled God.

Tragedy beckons ;)

edit. p.s I am so pleased he answered my question, and with this mouth watering piece as well!!

i must admit i had a huge grin on my face when he replied to mine...

SE is referring to how the book TtH is the cipher for the whole series, not the bard, basically suggesting reading the book with a fine tooth comb with give you the secrets to the whole series

Champoon: glad you caught the bard quote in TtH: now refer back to my saying that novel was the series cipher.

when I read this I thought that the Bard quote was what he was getting at, I know he has said that TtH was the cipher, but what if it was what you grasped out of the book?

when I read this I thought that the Bard quote was what he was getting at, I know he has said that TtH was the cipher, but what if it was what you grasped out of the book?

it could be read that way...

the quote:

Quote

The bard leaned back, retrieving his tankard. "It begins with you," he said. "And it ends with you. Your eyes to witness,
your thoughts alone. Tell me of no one's mind, presume nothing of their workings. You and I, we tell nothing, we but show"

The point i made from this quote was that he was describing his writing style... and that it is more a direct message to his readers than anything else...

The only other thing i can see that could be taken from this quote was the reference to Duiker and it starting/ending with him... but then it didnt really start with him...

edit

i read the "now refer back to my saying that novel was the series cipher."

just meaning that what i picked up was only one of the things hidden in TtH

no problem!

going on gut feeling after i read SE's post "Life as a human" about his father...

i think Tavore will sacrifice herself to save her army... but adding to that i reckon Ganoes will have a chance to save her but be foiled in the attempt to or he will have a choice to make - save Tavore or the world!

pure speculation though!

or where he answered one of the questions on the Tor site - alot of scenes in tCG will be echoed from earlier books...

Ganoes/Tavore standing over the others body ala Felisin?

Quote

'And what do you ask in return?'
'Use of a gate.'
Which gate?'
Shadowthrone giggled, then the eerie sound abruptly stopped, and in a serious tone he said, 'Starvald Demelain.'
'To what end?'
'Why, providing you with assistance, of course.'
'You want my sisters out of the way, too - perhaps more than I do. Squirming on that throne of yours, are you?'
'Convenient convergence of desires, Menandore. Ask Hood about such things, especially now'
'If I give you access to Starvald Demelain, you will use it more than once.'
'Not I.'

'Do you so vow?'
'Why not?'
'Foolish,' Hood said in a rasp.

Quote

Like me, Emroth, you're heading for the gate. Starvald Demelain. Where anything is possible.
Including the destruction of the warrens.
It's the blood, you see. The blood of dragons. Outside and inside. Dead and living. Aye, amazing the things you figure out. once you're dead. But not dead. Aye, it's all about the will.

Quote

In that Azath House there will be a tower, and in that tower, all the gates.'
'So?'
Quick Ben sighed. 'You damned idiot. The Gates of Starvald Demelain.'
'And?*
'Just this. Shadowthrone, and Cotillion. Who like using the Azath whenever it suits them. Now they've got a way in. Not just to this realm, either.'

Intrigue! ;)

cheers! it's something i've thought about abit but knowing - or more not knowing SE - he will suprise us all and prove me 100% wrong!

Quote

The first cracks appeared shortly after the execution of Sha'ik. None could know the mind of Adjunct Tavore. Not her closest officers, and not the commonn soldier under her command. But there were distant stirrings, to be sure, more easily noted in retrospect, and it would be presumptuous and indeed dismissive to claim that he Adjunct was ignorant of the growing troubles, not only in her command, but at the very heart of the Malazan Empire. Given that, the events at Y'Ghatan could have been a fatal wound. Were someone else in command, were that someone's heart any less hard, any less cold. This, more than at any other time behorehand, gave brutal truth to the conviction that Adjunct Tavore was cold iron, thurst into the soul of a raging forge...

"None to Witness"
(The Lost History of the Bonehunters)
Duiker of Darujhistan

i think this alone gives a hint of whats ahead...

the title of the chapter and book, "None to Witness" and "The Lost History of the Bonehunters" points directly to the already predicted "Unwitnessed" events of tCG!

Tragedy is coming... along with a broken heart no doubt...

how would Duiker know about these events or happenings? well my guess is that soldiers / characters survive to tell the tale? but then, how would they know what Tavore felt or knew at the time? i'm suspicious

I don't see how any of that speculation relies on eyewitnesses knowing what Tavore was thinking? Likely there will be some evidence as to what happened/will happen, and what is written up there speculates on the character of Tavore and notes that in the actions following she likely knew what was going on in her army and in the empire.

I disagree, imo Tavore knows Tavore and nobody else knows her. Maybe T'Amber did but she is dead. No one can know her plans, they can guess them, they can write them down or spread rumour but it won't be accurate. It's unwitnessed so people can only guess as best they can

SE answering various questions...

Ganoesail: oddly enough, I can give you an answer on my favourite character. Tavore. And just the thought of her brings water to my eyes -- you'll know why, I hope, come the release of The Crippled God.

Tragedy beckons :killingme:

I wrote that question, oddly enough Champoon I am more curious to the answer towards your question. About the Bard in TtH and how this will be the Cipher for the whole series!! could you explain it to me please if you understand it a lot more?

edit. p.s I am so pleased he answered my question, and with this mouth watering piece as well!!

Champoon: glad you caught the bard quote in TtH: now refer back to my saying that novel was the series cipher.

when I read this I thought that the Bard quote was what he was getting at, I know he has said that TtH was the cipher, but what if it was what you grasped out of the book?

it could be read that way...

the quote:

The only other thing i can see that could be taken from this quote was the reference to Duiker and it starting/ending with him... but then it didnt really start with him...

edit

i read the "now refer back to my saying that novel was the series cipher."

just meaning that what i picked up was only one of the things hidden in TtH

yes, i interpret it that way too now. well i guess TtH will have to be re read again. I'll read it more slowly this time!!

Thanks Champoon.

Now what do you reckon got SE crying when he thinks of Tavore?

no problem!

going on gut feeling after i read SE's post "Life as a human" about his father...

i think Tavore will sacrifice herself to save her army... but adding to that i reckon Ganoes will have a chance to save her but be foiled in the attempt to or he will have a choice to make - save Tavore or the world!

pure speculation though!

or where he answered one of the questions on the Tor site - alot of scenes in tCG will be echoed from earlier books...

Ganoes/Tavore standing over the others body ala Felisin?

rep'd just because of the sheer awesomeness of your thoughts, I think this could happen too, but the way you phrase it makes it seem more real to me.

From what I recall about his blog about Human and his father's death--he missed it or was late?

The quote about it begins with you and end with you. I'm thinking it began with Paran (SE himself) and ends with Paran.
In relation to Tavore SE's favorite, she will die and Paran will be late to "witness" ? Hmm, some real life parallel maybe?

As there are so many opportunities and directions the scenario could go in, how about, "we've landed in a mess" etc the quote from TtH, what if Paran actually dies, and Tavore is too late to save him? then sacrifices herself for her army? Not as likely as your suggestions though. I see where you are coming from, it did start with Paran and it could end with Paran. I like Champoon's theory the best though. Although I hope he is wrong and that the end is a total surprise!!
