This would probably be better discussed in the "later book's" forum, however:

Not only are there significant discrepancies with other ages in the book I assume you're referring to, you have to consider that we are talking a mostly Classical/Mediaeval civilisation. Aside from the effects of magic, which often means characters are much older than the natural lifespan of the population, we're talking a world in which 40 to 50 is probably rather old (without magic), while 30 would still be, despite this, someone in their 'prime'. Considering his life as a duellist/layabout, Murillio is hardly someone who would be in tip-top shape at even 45, in my opinion. So if you were to assume a higher natural lifespan (say 80), it is still entirely possible that he lost form in the space of 10 to 15 years, yes?

He isnt old, he is just older. 
My timelines are wrong, but between GotM and TtH can be up to ten years - maybe not, correct me, yo mighty with more powerful timelines:)
And ten years is hell of a time. From 27 to 37 is in medieval times brutal change. Not only medieval...in my 28 I cant do thing I did in twenty...damn, Im tired sooner, my really minor wounds heal longer (I still do martial art) and so on... and it will be worse. In GotM Murillo was cca 25-30 years maximally. In TtH he can be 35-40 - and thats for duellist really time to retire. And for professional lover...too. And with this realization comes depression and I think that this part of Murillo in TtH was written in great and realistic style.

And of course, add a little bit of GotMism...

Silencer - You can move it to another forum if you want, that's why I spoilered that part, though. I'm doing yet another series re-read so that's where I am now.

Ulrik - I wasn't sure how many years went by, so I guess a firm year count was sort of what I was looking for here. Also, I hadn't thought about the effects of what I would compare to a mid-life crisis for this character. I agree, it was well written, I liked Murillio better as a worn down hero than as a stud.

And yes, I forgot for a moment, Timeline is not important.

Even in MoI Murillio talks to Coll about how he's getting old and there are younger suitors that are taking his place amongst the women. I think Murillio was always a bit old, even in GotM, he just didn't have much PoV time or dialogue in GotM except to further the plot to get Coll re-nobled, so he never talked about how he was getting old in GotM. Maybe that's poor characterization, or maybe he just wasn't as relevant a character in GotM, but MoI clarifies it pretty good and therefore...

...it shouldn't be much of a surprise in TtH because of that MoI setup. Murillio was talking about it in MoI and then ___ years later it actually happens.

And on that note:
Harllo Jr. was conceived in MoI and is about 5 in TtH. And most people think it's insane that Harllo could be that *old*, so there is no way GotM (which is like a few months before MoI) could be 15 years before TtH.

Anyhoo i agree w D'rek that Murillio is already complaining about his age back in GotM. He's still a bit of a hardcase in MoI when he and Coll get the drop on Bauchelain/Broach.

And if he hadn't been screwed by his boots in TtH i think he could have taken Gorlas, tho then we would have been cheated of Cutter's Moment of Awesome #2 in TtH (#1 being knifing Rallick and #3 being standing with Karsa vs the HoL).
