Roughly 6ft diameter in the centre where stuff gets burned.

Previous owner of the house had the paving blocks haphazardly distributed around the fire pit and had a few pitiful rocks encircling the fire area.

no vision...

There is a hill encroaching on my radial pattern of blocks and I have a couple dozen 2ft masonry blocks plus a shit-ton more paving blocks. I'm going to build bleachers for the fire pit with it...or maybe a small stage for musical performances.

I'll try to remember to get a pic tonight. It really looks good I think.

Still needs some work (ie the stage / bleacher area) but its a vast improvement over the original.

Plus paving blocks are pretty cheap and a good way to make a good non-flammable ground covering around the pit.

Spit mounts are a freaking great idea.

Planters full of flame resistant plants are in the plan for sure, plus some concrete speaker pedestals for the musical performances.

I am definitely putting a covered wood box in too, cause with all the workshop junk going into the garage, there aint going to be room for silly firewood.

Budget a couple days for it. Moving those 2x2 paving blocks around is hard effing work. Individually completely manageable. Even 5-10 are manageable, but when you get placing 30+ in a session, plus building a rock ring plus tearing up sod and raking to level the bed underneath the blocks, it gets unbelievably tiring. Last night was the first sound sleep I've had in months.

I actually just built one as well, although it's nothing fancy, just a 2" think round cement slab that's about 4' in diameter dug into the sod with the circular fire pit blocks stacked 2 high in the middle with a metal grate about 6" above the ground to promote air flow.

Good suggestions one and all...especially that last one about a durhang pit.

I'm wondering if there is a good material to use as a firepit liner now. Once I got digging, I realized there is quite a bit of tar mixed with the gravel underneath where the fire gets lit. Much of it apparently was borrowed from the driveway. That stuff is mixed with tar to deter weed growth through the driveway and to knit together the gravel as you drive on it. There isn't a hellish amount of the tar-gravel mix in the pit, probably only a wheelbarrow full...but I'm thinking now it might be a good idea to at least get down to bare earth before I start doing much cooking over it. Anybody ever tried fire bricks as a pit liner?

I also think the previous houseowners used a lot of gas to light their fires. As I was digging sod to shape the area around the fire (and backfill with clean gravel) it all smelled of gasoline.

What is a circular fire pit block? Special purpose built fire pit thing?

It's basically just a solid cinder block that has a slight curve (about 30 degrees), so that when you put six together they form a nice little circle. I haven't seen them used for much other than fire pits. I'm sure they have a proper name, I just can't remember it.

oooooh...I get it now.

I've seen those at the hardware store. They're pretty slick looking actually. I often see them built up to a height of 1 - 1.5 feet and then a ring of red bricks put around the top for accent.

Looks kinda small in a pic.

Centre ring (fire ring) is about 6' diameter, and each layer of paving stones adds another 2ft to that, so overall about 18ft diameter. The spot where the rings aren't complete is the hill area where I'm going to place the stage. Muahahaha...this is going to rule.

Tried it out on the weekend with a good size fire.

The night ended putting full bottles of gasoline in the centre and then shooting them from a distance with my pellet gun.
