Can someone help me understand a passage?

So I'm reading the the very end of chapter four, the fight between Tattersail and the Hound Gear. Hairlock is in marrionette mode and starts by hiding in a box. Sail starts the fight by saying "Damn you, Hairlock! I need your help! Please!" So at this point I assume Sail and Hair are on the same side. As the fight go's on, Hairlock appears and attacks the hound with a spell which was effective. Sail has some kind of "understanding" and screams "Hound! He's reaching for your soul! Escape! Get out of here!" This is after the hound has tried to kill her. As Hairlock closes, Sail trips him, allowing Gear to escape. So, wtf? Can someone explain why Sail is concerned for the hounds soul, when he is clearly from Shadow, and was trying to kill her. Also, Hairlock, although not a friend, was not a foe either. What did I miss?

I'm a bit fuzzy on the scene, but I believe a lot of it relates to exactly what kind of magic Hairlock is using. It's (putting it on spoilers, not really a big spoiler and you might even know it already)
Spoiler
magic, which is extremely dangerous to deal with. Plus, by acquring a Hound of Shadow's soul, just think how powerful Hairlock could become - he's already starting to appear insane. Maybe someone else can elaborate more.
uhm, that should be 'stuff.' My stiff is never nihilistic.

Initially she just wanted Hairlock to help her - conventional magic style - but instead he hid until he could try and take the Hound's soul (the spell Hairlock attacked Gear with was the soul-stealing spell), which is something Tattersail doesn't want, because Hairlock is eventually going to go completely insane as he's been dabbling in chaos, and you really don't want him to get that much power whether presently allied with him or not. Tattersail recognised this, hence her warning to Gear.
More of Hairlock's motives will become clear later in the book, though.
Hope that helps.

That does help. I hadn't realized how stealing the hounds soul could empower hair. I also didn't think sail would possibly forfeit her life to prevent it. Thanks.

No problem, and to be honest I think Tattersail was more concerned about the Hound's life and the future consequences of Hairlock than her own.

I saw this too and thought it was odd, but I don't think you missed anything. I thought it was odd in the same way that Baruk would rather give Anomander Rake the heads of the sorcerers remaining after the siege of Pale, rather than turn over the sorcerers alive, fearing what Anomander would do to them with that unusually terrifying sword of his.

Baruk prefered to give Rake the heads because he considered being killed by Dragnipur is a fate to horrible to inflict on someone.

Both instances are similar in nature as one protagonist clearly views the potential results as far worse than death.
Stealing somethings soul is just plain nasty...even if its a Hound of Shadow!
Poor pup.
