Ok, I finished Memories of Ice (pretty sweet! look forward to reading House of Chains).

I have one observation about the end: Caladan Brood seemed to be absent at the end of the book. All the other main protagonists are given a snippet about what they are doing or heading.

* Dujek is heading to Seven Cities
* Korlat and Orfantal are going hunting for Kallor (Rake wants him alive because he has earned Dragnipur)
* Kilava and Onos Toolan (now mortal) tarry away with the Barghast. Tool's gonna get it on with Hetan.... lucky! (who doesn't though - - - nympo! Posted Image)
* Paran is chilling in his new pad (the Finnest House in Darujhistan) and hanging out at Picker and Blend's bar (purchased haunted K'rul's belfry)
* The other Darujhistan regulars (Kruppe, Coll, Murillo et. al) are hanging at the bar
* The T'lan Imass and Silverfox are going to help their kin on another continent to the south

But I do not remember reading what is happening with Caladan Brood at the end of MOI. Did I miss it?

He's brooding.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

It's mentioned passingly that Brood disbands the host and leaving the continent to the Malazan Empire.

I always thought this was a bit too easy. I would have liked to have heard of this having a backlash. Various factions feeling betrayed and turning against Brood. The last Free cities, the Crimson Guards, the Mott Irregulars, etc. you'd think they would all be angry that Brood disbanded the host. Let alone the tens of thousands of soldiers that had been fighting for the Empires freedom for well over a decade. How many of them had lost friends and family during those years? That hatred doesn't just go away.

I'd imagine any rage at brood would be tempered by the fact that he can create a mountain range under their feet at will.

That hammer wont protect him from a sharp blade across his throat while he's sleeping or a good archer shooting him in the back. Of course, nobody in the know about him and Rake would ever want to risk his rage, but it is still strange that the whole continent just rolled over just like that.

Thanks all for your replies. Yeah, seems like Brood's actions at the end of the book were mentioned in passing. I was expecting him to have some interaction regarding the actions of Kallor (death of WJ and the marines). I will have to revisit the last chapter and find the snippet about him.

Speaking of the Mott Irregulars, I find them very compelling. When it was reveled that they were behind the walls of Coral during the initial push, I was like... WTF! Also, what is up with Bole brothers? There's something about them. Is more revealed about the Mott Irregulars later in the series (especially the Bole brothers)? And what is it about that damn table (that is actually a card in the deck of dragons)?... they gotta have that thing for some reason. I would love to see a rich story line develop for them.

The Mott Irregulars, and even some of the Boles, will show up at various times through-out the series, but I'll leave it at that. You do get to find out more about them, obviously.

If you read some offhand remarks closely, you'll see that the table actually has all of the cards of the deck of dragons (at the time) built into it in a certain pattern. The reason for this was to cheat when gambling with another deck, since there are weird forces among the cards that could repel/attract them and only the BBs (who made it) would know the pattern. Once the table became its own card, the previous pattern for cheating got all scrambled and caused a few BBs to lose all their money.

Sweet! Good to know the Mott Irregulars have a story thread (even if minor) in later books..... I like 'em!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Regarding the fizzle of Caladan Brood's story at the end, could it be that SE is just trying to manage too many story threads in Memories of Ice? The reason I say this is that Brood is quite prevalent in the first 1/3rd - 1/2 of the book - - - - i.e. the agreement between Brood's host and Dujek to take a run at the Pannion Domin, Brood's "pulling on the reins" each time Kallor loses control in regard to Silverfox. Reaching his boiling point with Kruppe, thus putting his hammer into action ..... KRAKA-BOOOM!

On another side... do the Seguleh return in later books? (they must!). I need to know more about them!

True, but he'd already lost the Crimson Guard and, by the end of the book, the Barghast were going off to do their own thing. The Mott Irregulars probably never cared that much except for their own woods. So that just leaves a few free city companies of lancers and infantrymen and such. They are now very, very far from the cities they originally signed on to protect back up north, and those cities are all owned by the Malazans now. They'd probably start trekking up north and become bandits around their own cities, guerilla-warring the malazans. But I don't think there'd really be much of a chance of re-forming the army with those few, without the CrG and Barghast, and trying to retake Pale and the north. Maybe Brood even explained all that. Heck, maybe his 3rd-in-command took carge and did lead them up north. It's a bit unexplained, but no matter which way it went I don't think there'd be a whole lot of personal backlash to Brood.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.
