It's not institutionalised or anything, but by simple public holidays (Australia Day, ANZAC Day, Labour Day, Queen's Birthday etc.) we'd have about one public holiday a month as well. Americans would probably be in the same boat too, so it's kinda odd you don't have that many.

American "bank" holidays off the top of my head:

Jan - MLK Day
Feb - Presidents Day
March - ???? (spring break for schools)
April - Good Friday?
May - Memorial Day
June - ????
July - 4th
August - ?????
September - Labor Day
October - Columbus Day? (fall break in schools)
November - Turkey Day
December - Christmas
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

I'm feeling a bit let down by the lack of ridiculous American holidays. There is a broad movement to get the monday after the Super Bowl off.

I'm disappointed we don't have any ridiculous holidays either. As for the Super Bowl thing, we have the AFL Grand Final on a Saturday and the first Ashes Test is already on a public holiday (26th December), so we don't have an excuse for a long weekend. :p

Well, almost every month, with the exception of a few in the summer, I believe, people here in Canadaland feel the need to celebrate somehting mundane, give all the government employees a paid day off (or a chance to make time and a half wage), and generally bask in our gloruios decadence and lazyness.

In August, said occasion has been dubbed "Civic Holiday". The true meaning continues to puzzle scholars to this day.
Fact of the matter is, we get a random Monday of the month off work, justifying getting drunk Sunday night. I feel the beer companies might've paid certain politicians to pass said laws, but i'm definitely not complaining.

I'm moving to Canada!!!

Norway is like the Canada of Europe anyway (without the awesome long weekend policy and funny accent), so it'll probably not be much of a change :p

Umm, last time I checked Father's day is not a holiday that results in a day off here in Canadaland, so I'm not sure what Ment is talking about. I think we have about the same number of holidays as those in Americaland, some of them just fall on different dates.

Ugh why is it I come back to work after long weekends more tired than when I left! I really need to get my sleeping patters back to normal, this is awful.

A round of DW"s caffeine elixir's for everyone, if you don't want them just shoot them my way.

too much money.

U of M sent me a message last week, saying that, (apparently) they've accepted me a while ago, but since I didn't respond, they were gonna revoke the offer. Once I told them that I never actually got their offer or anything, they straigtened things out, and soon I shall be a happy law student in Winnipeg. in total, I'm looking at 15 grand a year (living included), instead of like 3o-something I was gonna run up in Windsor/Detroit. essentially, a question of some major economics.

Oh cool, so exciting!!! I get to have a malaz neighbour! So if it's 15 living included does that mean you will be living on campus? When do you start?

I think you will like Winnipeg, it's a beautiful city, friendly people and UofM is a great uni.

Starting in September, which also gives me some extra time to make money this summer. Considering i'm gonna shell out 4 and a half thundred for Driving school tomorrow, that's no small thing.

of course, this means I've gotta figure out new OSAP and rez arrangements, but those are minor details...

Driving school? Do you mean you don't have a drivers license! You're definitely going to need that if you're coming to Winnipeg. I mean you can bus it, but walking is def not an option, we are way too spread out. I have a lot of relatives in Ontario and they always comment on the fact that you can drive forever in Winnipeg and still not be halfway through the city. They are shocked at how sprawling the city is. Not as crowded as Toronto but definitely not as compact either. You'll be okay getting the bus from UofM to downtown though, they come every ten minutes, and once you are down town you can get anywhere else in the city with one bus or two. Of course once you get away from downtown it takes forever by bus. I don't envy you being a new driver in this city.

Oh you'll want to get a jump on the rez stuff, they fill up really fast. There are some affordable places just off campus, but not nearly as cheap.
