I could never get the hang of HoI 3 . I could never get a decisive win in any war.

Actually, I'm planning to get close with the Third Reich and join the axis, using their might to stomp over the Soviet Union. I haven't played the game yet so I don't know how feasible that is, it's an EU mindset talking there :unsure:

I don't remember the Archspore - I remember one on the way to a quarry or harbour or something where a bunch of people got dead, but it's been over a year since I played it (and at any rate all my saves got wiped anyhow).

Possible, but difficult. There's I think a national political tendency towards the allies that you can change or reverse, but it also depends on how and who influences you. If France and the UK pile on you, then drifting their way will be likely.

I seem to be on an Ubisoft AAA binge right now, bought and played through both Farcry 4 and AC Unity and now I bought the Crew.

So far I am liking it. I haven't been into racing games since the 90s but the combination of the arcade like driving and the Ubisoft open world MMO objectives makes this easily digestible and satisfying.

Every race you win earns you some kind of part for your car and you can do various skill based challenges to earn points and parts. It's fun.

Yeah, the Archespore is a beefed-up Act II version of the Echinops (their roots are purple, as opposed to brown and green of an echinops).You can encounter 1 of those in Act I, actusally, when

. Archespores aren't normally too tough, but that one is a prize monster, so it's tougher. Still, just use igni and strong, and that thing goes down in like 4 hits. The problem is, their ranged attacks have a chance of stunning/causing bleeding, which interrupts your attacks AND stunlocks you. But there's salves and potions that can help to deal with that, once you know, :unsure:

God, I love that game. 4 full playthroughs, and I think I'll replay both again before Witcher 3 comes out.

EDIT: Also, funny story: I am also playing through Thief 2 right now. just finished Kidnap today.

There are bombs that will do just that.

Honestly, though, the swamp and the fields are one of the reasons I like the Witcher so much, as weird as it sounds. They are grind-heavy, annoying as fuck areas, but they create opportunities opportunities for role-playing a survival RPG gamestyle. Precisely because they are so annoying every time you trek through them, it allows you to plan ahead, to minimize the time spent traversing it back and forth--the way you would in real life. So that instead of following quest markers every which way, you talk to everyone in the City, do all the Vizima stuff first, and then go to the swamp. At the harbour you make a checklist of all the places you may need to go to, and plot an optimal course to minimize unwanted encounters.

Also, stumbling out of the swamp onto a campsite, or making it to the Druid's Grove in the middle of the night is just as rewarding as dragging my bleeding carcass to the Bar in a thunderstorm in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. It's just a great use of atmosphere, imho.

Being more or less disappointed with Beyond Earth but unfortunately having gotten sick, I finally got around to play Transistor. It was amazing. You need to play this game. As with Bastion the voice acting and music is superb, but the art in Transistor, the atmosphere they generate is awesome.

Seriously, play it.

Agreed. I plan routes etc to help with planning the missions. Except for the times where I forgot like one thing I was meant to do and ended up having to go straight back. Happened a bit too regularly for my liking... *sigh*

Having been a bit disappointed with the later Total War games, I've all of the sudden got my blood flowing again when I saw this kickstarter campaign: Hegemoy III. It looks like everything I want, but I've got no experience with the developer or the previous incarnations of Hegemony. Any of you lot played any of them before? Is it shit?

Elite:Dangerous is officially released tomorrow, and I was curious to see if there were any takers on this here forum.
I know it's been out a while on early access, but they seem to have done a fair bit of work over the last few months.
I'll be picking it up in the new year probably, I've got Dragon Age 3 to plough into first. But Frontier has to be in my top 5 of all time, so any kind of enhancement on that would be epic.
Anyone else?

It looks.. awesome. I just wish it was on a console as it's more convenient for me at the mo. It looks like the Elite upgrade I've been waiting for since Frontier.

This is what I'm hoping for.
That game was crying out for hardware at the time, even though it coped quite well. It was way ahead of its time (elite even more so I suppose) and hasn't really been bested yet.
I was actually emulating the Amiga version on my old desktop last year.
I had to buy a silent mouse as I was keeping the GF up with my late night sessions.
So yeah I'm stoked, I just haven't rushed out to buy it knowing I've games stacked up to play.

As an aside, I actually managed to stumble upon a cache of online game saves for frontier showing some celestial rarities
Like a solar ellipse from one of saturns moons.
These guys had actually parked up on some distant moon and Fast Forwarded to a time of significance and saved it. For posterity.
It's like the Ace Rimmer of games.

a) really need to buy a new PC or majorly upgrade the current one;
:crybaby: buy myself a good joystick, preferably with a throttle on the side.

Controlling the ship with mouse and keyboard can be done, but it never felt intuitive for me, also because of how key combinations are set up. WASD with rolling the ship fixed at QE makes for uncomfortable movement.

I have a really slow broadband and I suppose that's my only gripe.

Didn't have problems with the online bit. Not a single disconnection, and game went without a hitch.

But: as a huge caveat: I played only a single beta, in a single ship, before core additions to the game were added (like for example mining). I would say I didn't even play long enough to get on top of the learning curve to the extent where I could judge whether or not the game is good entertainment or not. What I can say is that I wasn't frustrated by anything. I didn't comfortably master controlling a ship which you can move in one direction while looking/aiming in a completely different one. In the combat scenario's I tried, I got pasted as often as I won, but before I call it challenging, I have to take into account that I was a noob at flight control.

I certainly didn't go toe-to-toe in a dogfight with another player, so no comparison there either.

A quick browse through youtube gives you awesome videos that really showcases all the options this game has. Stealth-docking for example is awesome, but when I tried it, I got lasered to death every time. I wouldn't want to try that in a newly bought, expensive ship before I could do it with my eyes closed in the cheapest standard ship possible.

I guess enjoyment also depends on whether or not trading is your thing, as that still seems the one road to get to cash you need to upgrade/buy ships that suit the playstyle you want to adopt. Also, I think the game will require several hours of commitment in a row if you want to get things done. I do think it can't be played in 15 minute stretches like one could do with a TBS (which is how I am "forced" to spend most of my game time nowadays).

That aside, I guess that over time, the game will turn likely into EVE. Yes, playing privately without encountering other players is possible, and space will be super large. But there's just so much more that a player organisation can do, compared to an individual, especially with an entire economy to play with.

Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.
