Malazan Empire: Demons? - Malazan Empire

So what are they. This bothers me more and more as these stories go on.

We have the Gryllen (?) the soletaken/demon pet of Tayschrenn's that is very nearly as powerful as Rake.

The little soletaken demon/monkey thing from Deadhouse gates. Large and powerful enough to give pause to a hound, I think.

There are quite a few shadow demons, all of which are fairly powerful, and many of which are pretty damn smart.

So what are they, and how do they fit in the heirarchy of the various groups. Are they literally the spawn of the different warrens--some sort of life brought forth from the warrens tehmselves? Do all warrens have demons.

It doesn't make much sense--they don't seem to be real players in the game of houses and holds, yet they are quite clearly sufficiently powerful. Yet they do very little, beyond making somewhat foolish bargains with mages.

Anyone have any ideas. I kind of think they are spawned from the warrens, and are somehow the natural habitants of most of them. They may be particularly bound by that link, somehow (kind of a cheesy out, but oh well). Maybe more will be stated as the books go on, because it really doesn't make much sense.
