Tays would crush Quick in a one-on-one confrontation, obliterate him completely, grind him into dust. Then when Tays goes home and relaxes, he's utterly unprepared for going to the pantry and finding SOMEONE's replaced all of his food with otataral-imbued scorpions.

Tayschrenn can still outpower Quick Ben, but Quick could survive it and outscheme him later, I'm sure.

I'll admit, this made me laugh.  :D

I dont know if this has been asked before, but search didn't come up with anything.

After reading someone saying that Tayscrenn was 'in a league of his own as a mage', I started wondering just how powerful he really is. In a face to face battle, who do you think would win between Tay and QB?

tayscheren definitly, and with ease.
even QB claims it would be a suicide to face him, in gotm.
and later his ability is mroe than hinted at.
he is called the pre eminent wizard of his time.

and of course, he somehow bottled a galain lord.
and i mean litteraly bottled.

The rarity of High Mages is also talked up a lot in the early books. Look how many come out of the woodwork later on, hmm?

The power of the Galayn Lord is also a GotMism, imo. While we don't ever see another one, I also think we can safely say that

Now, the thing with QB is he often talks up other people, and powers. And yet, nine times out of ten he proceeds to show himself to be greater than what he's been talking about. You just can't tell with Ben Adaephon Delat, outsmarter of Gods and mortals alike. If he faced Tay in a face to face battle, it would be the most devious face to face battle you had ever seen.

Oh, and the other thing no-one seems to have brought up yet...Bonehunters minor spoiler:

I think that one thing that should be considered is that in MoI QB sort of went in coma as a consequence of the warrens' poisoning. Tay instead managed to lob a powerful magical attack against Kallor who was basically focusing the Chaotic power of the CG and a short time later turned to ash the Seerdomin in Coral that, by then, had probably become the heart of the illness.
If we consider that: QB was basically powerless pre-Talalmandas, the necromancers(no lightweight either) were having problems, Brood himself admitted that he was having trouble controlling the effects of his hammer, a powerful Andii like Korlat had difficulties using KG; that ought to mean something.

Also to your spoiler, Silencer

Hmmm i think it would be an intresting fight but i would have to agree with everyone here that QB would lose in an upfront fight, notice how its mentioned several times over the book that thats not QB's specialty. Its mentioned in MOI that QB isn't as upfront as other mages likes hairlock he tends to work better not standing out on the field and just realeasing raw power, and agian at the same spot its later shown that what QB struggles agianst an upfront threat when TY ends up beating it. Also i think that QB would be smart enough not to fight TY unless it was his ussual type of fight.

Whoa... so much to read. I did not real all the other posts. Tays has brute strength.. More like he can channel a lot of power. (Evidence: Gardens of the Moon).QB is more of a finesse mage. He likes to mix and match and understands the warrens inanimically. Till date, the greatest feat (recorded) of his are soulshifting and the driving away of the Edur fleet (Though he was sweating like a pig  ). Can he handle more power than Tays without actually getting whoomped.... Hmmm.....Yet to see it..

Also, even though both of them are wily and cunning (in a benign way), it is more likely that QB would win using only guile as he could outwit even gods..

I really can't agree with anyone about Tayschrenn beating Quick Ben through raw power until I've read The Crippled God. I won't say why since I don't know how to spoiler text stuff. QB could almost certainly outwit Tay, though.

I've also always seen magical strength hard to really compare in these books.

Alright I think i can ask this question here because it is connected.
Can Quick Ben use Kurald Galain?

In Memories of Ice it seems like he opened the warren so the bridgeburners could go through it, and also

Backgammon...Quick, hands down..it is a game of long term planning and stealth with luck added and who else has THAT combination!??!

As to spell power, Quick can release multiple warrens in one go (as in Deadhouse Gates I think...where he faces off against the Necromancers?). Tay has only released the powers of singular warrens as far as I've read (only through to and including HoC).

So, assuming there was pre-warning, I'd go with Quick due to his use of multiple warrens and his ability to relase them selectively or in one go as well as his "slight of hand" as it where.
