When I read the part in this book where Apsalar describes her childhood daydreams about the gardens on the moon, I was dumbfounded. Not only was the moment a telling and tragic picture into Apsalar's character, it occured to me that Erikson might have had this in mind when he wrote GoTM. When I read GoTM, I didn't really know what the title refered to, but my guess was that it was a reference to Moonspawn.
Was there a reference in GoTM to Apsalar's childhood daydreams or did Erikson have this in mind all along or did he just retcon this in?
Either way I thought it was a genius little bit of character development. I really see Cotillion's possesion of Apsalar and subsequent regret over the act as a pivotal moment in the world of Malazan. I'm currently reading RoTCG guard before I move on to Reaper's Gale. I don't know what Amanas and Cotillion's master plan is, but they seem quite different as characters then their GoTM or KoK selves. More sympathetic, less blood thirsty.

That part is actually in GotM, you probably just missed it. She tells Crokus the story of Grallin's Gardens when they're on top of K'rul's Belfry, if I recall correctly. Indeed, though, the story is very good.
uhm, that should be 'stuff.' My stiff is never nihilistic.

The whole story arc about the moon is heart-rending and beautiful.

wow, I remember that rooftop conversation and the gardens vaguely so I'm surprised I didn't get the reference to the title at the time, because I was a little puzzled throughout the whole book about the title. *shrug* guess I'll take a closer look on my second read through

and then after Cotilion tells her he lost Crokus she has an inner dialogue where she thinks to herself, "one by one the gardens died." I thought this was a reference to her childhood dreams and also a sly reference to the oddness with the moons possibly being hit by jade statues...

I have seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter at the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain...."
