I think I read that Fiddler is his real name and Ondaroof is his last name.

Fiddler Ondaroof. :)

I read somewhere Fiddler was his surname.

His first name was Kiddie but Braventooth thought it best if he dropped it

I don't ever want to know his true name. First of all, I'll always know him as Fiddler no matter what. Second, I don't want to hear his name for fear that it might be terrible...Seerdomin is the perfect case of this. I remember shuddering in disgust when I read his real name, it was that terrible.

What's wrong with Segda Travos? Or whatever it was. It's not like it was a Travosty.

Fid's real name is Peters Stevens.

Concerning WJ's name. I was under the impression that it is Iskar Jarak. I don't remember reading anything about Iskar Jarak being a tribe name.

Concerning Seerdomin. I wasn't too keen on that entire portion of TtH tbh. His name surprised me as well but I liked it a lot.

What about Not-Apsalar (:)). Did we ever get her real name?

QB, Kalam and WJ names are freely given though on a few occassions, (WJ been Iskar Jarak)

Have you got a quote for context?

Iskar Jarak is name given by tribe warned by WJ, it means Iron Prophet iirc. Its not his real name. IIRC. IMHO.AFAIK Posted Image

Iskar Jarak means 'Bird that Steals' I believe, named after said bird that originates on the Seven Cities continent. I think some of the Bonehunters are in a tavern in Letheras maybe and are talking about Whiskyjack and there happens to be two Jaraks in cage next to them.

Iron Prophet is a honorific given to WJ by the tribe that Karsa avenges far to the west of Seven Cities, where he boards the Edur ships to return to the Empire to fight Rhulad. I found the section in The Bonehunters where Samar and Karsa are talking to Boatfinder about the tribes beliefs , and it is my opinion that Iskar Jarak is a name, one that WJ was given previous to his encounter with the tribe, where Iron Prophet is a title given to him after WJ laid down some safety rules for the tribe.

I have no idea why Hood and the undead Jaghut refer to Whiskyjack as Iskar Jarak, as well as having no clue as to why he was given the nickname in the first place, what he was stealing, or if he has any similarities or connections with the bird. I always liked the name Iskar Jarak better than Whiskyjack to be honest.

You never thought Iskar Jarak sounds oddly alike Whiskeyjack?
Could merely be an attempt to pronounce his name. He ascended with the Bridgeburners but was also hailed as a prophet of Boatfinder's tribe, could mean more than one road to ascension.
I've seen it written that Whiskeyjack's Seven Cities moniker, which would mean its their interpretation of his name. Which probably means just the same.

The whiskey jack is a bird of the crow family as well, and what do crows do? They steal.

Presumable Whiskeyjack and Fiddler stole Dunsparrow (another birdname in Whiskeyjack's family) away from a temple of Hood as told in The Bonehunters.

I recently had the same thought, that Iskar Jarak was some variant of Whiskeyjack. Even if it was just a behind-the-scenes play by Erikson, they seem related.

bird that steals is the moranth translation of whiskeyjacks name, whiskeyjack being a Canadian bird known for stealing things. Why whiskeyjack was given this name is unknown, as he has shown no great tendencies to kleptomania, but se
conformed that's where the name came from. I believe his name is translated to magpie in several eastern European translations.

Iskar jarak is the boat peoples corruption of this name and not his true name. The true name of the majority of the bb's is left unknown, and I think its unlikely we'll learn any of there true names. It adds to the mystery after all.

another interesting point is that jaraks are birds that will apparently lay its egg in another birds nest, its offspring eats all the other baby birds and then the jaraks come back and kill the nests original owners too.

There was one clear incidence of theft involving Whiskeyjack, which is when he (and fiddler I think?) stole his baby sister back from the cult of hood (well she was sworn to hood or something like that? Don't have the books handy to check).

Bird that Steals could come from Fid and WJ's past. In Bonehunters, Kalam QB and Aps meet up with Fid/Str and the rest of the squads that made it out of Y'ghatan alive and Fid hears from Corabb that Leoman escaped with Dunsparrow. He then freaks out and tells QB and Kalam about how Dunsparrow's mother died during her birth and her father was already dead and WJ was away on his apprenticeship. So after Dunsparrow is extracted from her dead mother's body she is given and sanctified to Hood. WJ and Fid hear about this and go steal her back. I'm doing a reread myself and just came upon this and it struck me as interesting

Iskar Jarak is his given name in the Quon Tali language I think. Wasn't he Quon Tali? It means "bird that steals". Whiskeyjack is the Malazan name for the same bird?
So, the conversation goes like this, "Hi, my name is Iskar Jarak."
"Iskar Jarak? What the hell does that mean?"
"They named me after the bird that steals."
"Oh, you mean the whiskeyjack? Well, why didn't you just say that? Whiskeyjack it is."

No Iskar Jarak is a Seven Cities name. The guys Karsa and Samar Dev meet in TBH called him that and in TtH Toc wonders why WJ uses a 7C name.

lol, Whiskeyjack is a bird? Hell, I always thought he just had that name because he liked Whiskey. You know, Braven just running around, suddenly seeing WJ drinking whiskey, calling him Whiskeyjack after that all the time.
Ah well, a bird is cool also

As for Fiddler's true name: I don't really care. I like his name as it is, running around with his Fiddle. And when he plays... oh when he plays!

As for why WJ is now called Iskar Jarak: I guess it has more to do with WJ having died than anything else. If he would've kept the same name after death it would be as if he never died. Now we have a pure distinction. He gave up his life as WJ (well, Kallor helped a bit ofc :( ) and started a new one, in servitude to Hood (because he stole away his sister from Hood?) as Iskar Jarak.
