Nope. Domestic market is still pretty insular. Consumer culture in Japan is probably my biggest beef with this country. People pay ridiculous prices for things, with little questioning of why things are so expensive. Consumer's really take it up the arse for most things.

Actually, one of the reasons that Australia is doing so well is that we are selling resources to china in the forms of coal, iron, etc.

That being said, yes, we are heavily socialized, thought not as heavily as Europe. i like to think we have the best of both the american and European systems:

we will look after you if you are down on your luck to ensure your basic necessities, but it's not going to be a comfortable existence. if you're not happy about that, get your ass out there and look for a job.
Question:

Does being the only sane person in the world make you insane?

If a tree falls in the woods and a deaf person saw it, does it make a sound?

Tax is higher here than in a lot of European Countries - a lot of it gets fed back to the Middle Class a bribes for voting.
