After three years I decided it was time to re-read GOTM. Happily surprised on how easy and enjoyable the re-read turned out. A lot of the storylines now made sense, but not all. I will never understand what happened at Pale unless Erikson or ICE write a novel about Tayschrenn. Below are what I thought were interesting topics. Except for a brief foray into Deadhouse Gates to confirm an age, all topics are from GOTM US TOR HC

Orfantal is Korlat's brother in the TOR book.

AGES - 1154BS. Paran is 12, The year the Mages entered the Mouse Quarter and ran amuck.
1161 - Paran is 19, his sister Tavore, a year younger is 18. Felisin 1s 13. Dujek Onearm is 77. Lorn is 18. Sorry is 13.
1163 - Dujek, according to Tattersail looks 50 instead of his 79 years.
1163 - Lorn in a rage to Tattersail. I was but 11 when the Mages entered the Mouse Quarters
1164 -
Spoiler

1161 - Sorry. The recruitment Sergeant for the Malazan army thinks she looks 12 or 13.
1163 Tattersail thinks she can be no more than 15. Whiskeyjack in Darujhistan wonders why QB is so frightened of this 15 year old girl. A few days later WJ mentions her at 17. I think 15 is more accurate.

Dragnipur - Krull to Kruppe explaining Dragnipur: Forged in darkness, it chains souls to the world that existed before the coming of light.
Tool to Lorn: Dragnipur is a sword born of the Age before light. Somewhat ambiguous, but if accurate Dragnipur is a very old sword.

Rigga - Rigga to Fisher girl: What you got in the basket there? No answer. Fisher girl realizes she was asked a question: I'm Sorry. The horses are so loud.
Rigga the Seer, the wax witch to Fisher girl: Mark this as truth. I am the last to speak to you. You are the last to hear me. We are linked. Rigga will preserve you (Block her memories). But is all I can do.
Recruiting Sergeant Aragan to Fisher girl: What's your name soldier? Response, Sorry. My name is Sorry.
Who answered for the Fisher girl, Rigga or Cotillion? I think Rigga, the last to hear Fisher girl's comment.
The Seer makes a prophecy: Look to the lord spawned in Darkness; his is the hand that shall free you,
Prophecy comes true. Rake chase Shadowthrone out of Rake's affairs and tells him to take Cotillion with him
Cotillion leaves Sorry
Sorry talking to WJ in Darujhistan about Kruppe, He is a talent. WJ, A Seer? Sorry winced and answered, I believe so with a trembling voice. She follows Kruppe. The word Seer made her feel as if her brain burst open. The pain was waning. She heard herself murmur, I am Cotillion, Patron of Assassins. The Seer is dead. A part of Sorry's brain cried out at that; another part asked, What Seer?
Rigga the Seer is dead, but the protection of Sorry's brain by the Wax Witch remains
Mallet tells Paran that the possession (Cotillion) is gone, but she has someone else inside her who has been protecting Sorry's mind, but she dying and needs help. Paran suggest to Mallet to give it what it needs so it
can do what it wants to do. Mallet helps with High Denul. Certain memories, skills are freed, and with them a brutal knowledge. Sorry is now Apsalar and there is pain in her eyes. She tells WJ I wish to return home.

Baruk tells Rake about Icarium's wheel forecasting that the birth of the new year is 'Year of Moon Tears'. Rake stiffens. Baruk I would put little faith in it though the titles were devised over a millennium ago.
Rake the wheel is Icarium's correct? I suggest you heed Icarium gifts - all of them. A thousand years is not so long a time. Icarium visited me eight hundred years ago in the company of the Trell Mappo.
Mappo's been with Icarium a very long time.

Rake asks Baruk why he is mad that the Tiste Andii wiped out a hand of the Assassin Guild. Baruk replies that
the Guild insures balance. It keeps ambitious people on The City Council and elsewhere from being too ambitious or corrupt else an assassination on them will be purchased. It's how Darujhistan survived 3000 years.
Control politicians by assassination - tough city.

More to come.....

What is the purpose of this topic, good sir?
"Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

One version of what happened at Pale is given in GotM another, by Silverfox and Tay is given in MoI.

Orfantals sex is a classic GotMism.

Dujek looks younger than he is because he was a part of the Old Family that had residence in the Deadhouse.

Generally, the age of people and the time line is not important, especially not if it is information taken out of GotM.

As for the age of Dragnipur, this is not the right forum to discuss that subject but we know from RCG that:
Spoiler

The story of why and how long Mappo has been with Iccy is told in DG or HoC I think.

I think he's just dotting down interesting passages and his thoughts as he is reading and giving us the chance to comment.

Personally, I'm always glad when someone starts a topic like this. Most of my Erikson books have wandered off on me and I have yet to replaced most of them, such as GotM, so a thread like this is always a great reminder of some of the little things that I've forgotten about. Like Rigga, I mean, I didn't forget about her, just her importance to Sorry's plot line.

Thanks Wampry!
Talking to you, is like clapping with one hand...what is it?

Just to let the forum know that a re-read of GOTM is impressive if you haven't read it in a few years. Lot of information comes to light. Info that I either forgot or never knew. So, I posted what I thougt would interest the forum.

I know but neither one made sense to me. Too many unanswered questions.

Orfantals sex is a classic GotMism.

True. I thought it interesting that Erikson corrected the Gotmism in the USA Tor version. He may have made other corrections. I wouldn't recognize them.

Dujek looks younger than he is because he was a part of the Old Family that had residence in the Deadhouse.

My intent here was to give the ages of main characters at a certain date, 1161bs

Generally, the age of people and the time line is not important, especially not if it is information taken out of GotM.

Maybe not important, but I thought interesting. Information taken out of GOTM was minor merely a confirmation of the age of one of the characters.

This is the right forum to discuss Dragnipur as it is expained in GOTM

The story of why and how long Mappo has been with Iccy is told in DG or HoC I think.

I only wanted to list items in GOTM. I know there are problems with some of my comments in later books. Not trying to resolve questions, just list tidbits from GOTM - there are more which I will post later.

Actually, I copied and typed notes for my own records then printed them.
Thought what the hell might as well copy them in the forum

I actually, too, appreciate someone laying out these 'tidbits' as they help this first time reader of the series to better correlate all the characters, interactions & events. And there is so much that I missed in my first reading, I'll admit.

Still, the above post made me LOL
