Denmark has almost the same life expectancy as the US. We really need to make Scandinavians eat healthier and exercise more.
The leader, his audience still,
considered their scholarly will.
He lowered his head
and with anguish he said,
"But how will we teach them to kill?"

Take good care to keep relations civil
It's decent in the first of gentlemen
To speak friendly, Even to the devil

I was watching a danish documentary on how some people are genetically more fortunate in the sense that they burn fat easier than others. The physicians were jabbering on about how the muscles in your legs burn much more fat than the muscles in your arms, even if they do the same amount of work. And they were stabbing these huge needles deep inside the test subjects leg muscles (surprisingly graphic for daytime television) while they were running on a treadmil breathing through an oxygen mask. It was all very technical, and it looked very painful.

Anyway, the host of the show was just repeating herself over and over again whenever the doctors weren't speaking. "So perhaps part of the reason we are fatter now than before, is because through evolution we have been wired for several hours of physical labour every day. But with our new lifestyles, we don't move around so much, and so we need to change our genetics. Could be, some time in the near future, you can just eat a pill and all the fat will burn off."

Every time she started to talk I was thinking: What the fuck is wrong with these people? You want to invent a pill that can make you loose fat just by sitting on your ass all day? What is next? A pill that will magically restore your severly damaged liver from alcohol abuse just so you can drink yourself stupid every weekend for the rest of your life?

Well, the fact that people have different metabolism rates has been well-established for a while. I've got a couple of friends/relatives that can eat the house down and yet never seem to gain weight, while others, and myself, have to be careful how much we eat compared with how much exercise we do.
As far as the leg muscles go, well, they're larger, so it's fairly logical to assume that they use more energy.

As for pills...well, yeah, that would have some benefits, but it also, as you say Urb, has ridiculous implications. Where does it end?
