....ever written in the history of writing.
"Janall, once Empress of the Lether Empire, was now barely recognizable as a human. Brutally used as a conduit of the chaotic power of the Crippled God, her body had been twisted into a malign nightmare, bones bent, muscles stretched and bunched, and now, huge bulges of fat hung in folds from her malformed body. She could not walk, could not even lift her arm, and the sorcery had broken her mind, the madness burning from eyes that glittered malevolently in the gloom as Nisall, carrying a lantern paused in the doorway.
The chamber was rank with sweat, urine and other suppurations from the countless oozing sores on Janall's skin; the sweet reek of spoiled food, and another odour, pungent, that reminded the Emperor's Concubine of rotting teeth."
These paragraphs actually made me squirm because I equate foul smelling things with rotting teeth as well. Ugh soooooooooooo gross. Anyone else agree that these are two of the most disgusting paragraphs in the first 7 books?

The rape parts in this book was the most off-putting for me. Prior to these Erikson has stayed mostly away from these kinds of stories, the rape of Stonny was very brief in its description, and then, there they were.

Stonny, not Stormy. Something raping Stormy would be really high on my list of paragraphs I might want to unread.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Or paradoxically, they could be quite funny.
"What's that little undead killing machine? You want to thank me for keeping your stone sword safe?"

The crossbowman's - Stormy's - voice drifted out from the shadow beneath the sailcloth: "That would be a year and a day, the night I dressed up as a Kanese harlot - had Gesler fooled for hours. Mind you, he was pretty drunk. Mind you, so was I."

If you take the time to consider how the siege of capustan went despite its relatively distant descriptions, the tenescowri are pretty awful. Especially when keeping in mind that they were no different from the people cowering in the tunnels under the city, besides being mind-raped to kill and eat anyone in their path while raping any dying men at the same time.

I found the rape scenes harder to read actually. And you have a treat waiting for you, for when you begin on DoD.

Hey, refresh my memory please. When did Stonny get raped? By whom? Was it during the siege of Capustan?

Yes, by a seerdomin I believe, in a tower on the walls of Capustan. It isn't... detailed.

Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

I remember Gruntle finding Stonny very weak, with broken daggers and her dress in a not so good condition. However, this does not imply rape does it? At that time, I understood this as Stonny getting bested in a fight, not as a rape.

There was also mention of a handprint on her breast and the fact that her clothes were torn did suggest it. Besides later Stonny says that she found the Serdomin and, was, well, most vicious.
