Now, don't get me wrong, I love this series to death,

but the whole Barghast war, the whole Borklando(sp?) thing just seems so pointless and annoying. Drags on and on, wastelands, yadda yadda. The 'Snake' story-line is just so excessively desolate with the bugs, worms, lizards...
Dunno. I know the ending will be good (it always is) but I don't think I've ever been this annoyed since 3/4 of the Bonehunters and most of House of Chains.

Anyone else? =/

I have pretty much the same feelings. Doing a re-read now, and hopefully will be like ToH, where it went from my least favourite in the series to one of best. But so far still finding the Barghast stuff boring. Although on re-read I am finding the Snake much better, think I must have skimmed it last time.

All the parts of the book that I didn't see going anywhere in the book, I am expecting to suddenly make sense and become far more significant once we get our hands on The Crippled God.

But yeah, I found myself skimming the Snake parts over and over, and having to force myself to go back.

the only thing that really dragged for me was the barghast, as it was pretty obvious from the start that the barghast had fucked themselves over. all the other plotlines drew me in just because of their newness, specially the snake

Yeah, the middle of the book was a bit of a slog for me too. I thought the Snake storyline was good because of its bleakness, but a lot of the petty tribal politics stuff with the Khundryl, Barghast, Akrynnai etc. just felt like a retread of things Erikson has written about a lot already. Most of the storylines do eventually get interesting or at least get wrapped up fairly neatly, though.

I thought it was his best for a while, really. I skipped over the snake bits as much as I could, but all the other parts held decent interest for me, personally. I loved Bonehunters though, so maybe we have a different outlook.

I didn't find the Snake at all tedious, I think because there was enough different things about it (sure, there's been plenty of long marches, but none all children yet) and it was written in a different enough tone. The Barghast I didn't like as much, especially after Tool died, but the Kryn, Akryn, Bolkando and other new cultures from that area I definitely liked.

I loved the parts with the Barghast, actually. I'll agree they dragged at times, but I still loved them. When the scene with Tool and all that jazz happened, I actually called my friend and told him he was going to hate this book because of that, though of course I didn't tell him what happened. Wouldn't want to spoil it for anyone. That would just be cruel.

As for the Snake, I didn't care much about that plotline and skimmed it until those "Quitters" finally caught up with the kids. I also paid a bit more attention to it when I realised they were kids, but it was still very hard to care about.

just do what i did on my first re-read, skim read the barghast story sections paying attention to tool and his kids and the book transformed into one of my favourites

I enjoyed the parts with the Khundryl raiding and the Barghast-Akrynnai skirmishes. Of course, that fizzled out but it was good while it lasted.

By the end the Snake was one of my favourite storylines.

The Barghast storyline is frustrating. On the re-read some of the more obscure bits became clearer and more interesting, notably Cafal, Torrent and Wolf-Girl but other parts remain my least favourite of the book.

I almost couldnt make it through this book becasue of the barghast scenes. Really hated them.

I really liked this book so I didn't have many problems with it.
The Barghast interested me because I wanted to know how dep they dug their own grave(it was very deep).
The Shake were intriguing, gave us some info on the Andii and had a great charcter in the Watch.
The multiple-personlaity Icarium was simply brilliant.
The only one I found boring was the Snake(I found myself skipping the poems after a while only to be forced to re-read them properly to understand what was going on)

Finished it last week (takes a loooong time for Erikson's books to get to where I live) and as usual found that everybody else in the forum have discussed/speculated what I wanted to. Like TTH, the first 2/3 is slow before the ending smacks the hell out of you. I understand that its the Book of the Fallen, and Erikson is the master of the unexpected but Hetan and the Barghasts end was so depressing and not the way I wished for them to go down, especially after MoI.
