How could you handle the taint in a game? Would it be viable to have a system where male channelers are progressively punished for using saidin? Permanent stat decreases offset by the most powerful abilities in the game?

Maybe they could work it so that each time you level up in the male One Power, you suffer a permanent decrease in another stat like intelligence or charisma (assuming it uses a system like that).

That would be an interesting dynamic. You can summon flaming swords and Travel, but dexterity or strength take a serious hit.

The way they handled certain abilities in the Vampire: the Masquerade game would probably be a good basis. The more you rely on Saidin, the crazier your character gets, making it more likely you will lose control of him during battles or conversations, possibly ruining conversations or damaging your allies.

Yes, the Malkavian tendency to get gibberish in their dialogue choices or randomly start talking to inanimate objects would be a good aspect to have, too. VtMB was awesome, though once again a very buggy game for a long time until the community finally stabilised it with patches.

But the issue there would be also that simply by channelling Saidar you got exposed to the taint (iirc), which would mean that your 'Insanity level' so to speak would be on constant increase...whereas in VtMB it was based on any inhumane actions you performed, which you could essentially avoid for the entire game quite easily, much like it was easy to avoid breaching the Masquerade for the most part. Balancing that in context - obviously it would be a trade off between using your power and going insane, making you more likely to hold back on its use - could be a very difficult process...and no doubt the publisher deadline would screw it up. :S

It would have to be a much longer and subtler process than Vampire though, If I remember correctly there were only three or four levels fo masquerade/insanity, this would have to work on a sliding scale. If they did it right you would have to choose whether using saidin to get past difficult fights early in the game instead of using some second skill like blademaster would be worth the risk of having an unusable character later in the game. Hopefully you wont be forced to play with your main character wielding saidar, that way if you do overuse a male-channeling party member you just lose out on using him, rather than having to restart the game. Maybe they'll let you steal that male a'dam from the forsaken, in which case you would just aim your crazy ashaman and blow the shit out of everything.

The potential for fail in this is simply spectacular, the amount of bitching, no matter how good the game might actually be, will be simply phenomenal. I eagerly await the flame wars, get this game out now!

downer:
- it's fucking WoT.

upsides:
- Obsidian Entertainment. These guys are solid (outdid Bioware with KotOR2, which was better than the original, even if noticable unfinished)
- if half of what I hear about Rand's life is true, we'll get to tap a lot of pussi (you know what the plural for pussy is, Lester? Pussi! Jimmy taught me that.)

The game play in KotOR2 was much better than the original, but the story and the characters were pretty crap.

Let's just hope they don't follow Bioware's tendency to include embarrassing sex scenes that could only appeal to a 12 year old that's never watched porn (if they even exist anymore).

There is going to be braid tugging taunts.

I bloody well HOPE so. It's not WoT if no braids get tugged.
Extra points if you can pull the braid full out of your head and strangle a Foresaken to death with it.

ideally it's an optional power-up and when you use too much you randomly 'splode.

I enjoyed the WoT shooter from 1999. The Shadar Logoth level was brilliant.

Wasn't that just a Doom mod?

Obsidian has some serious RPG chops but their games are usually fairly buggy and/or not quite finished. I'm still bitter about KOTOR 2.

that's not obsidian's fault. see: executive meddling.

I love TV tropes.

- Abyss, ...waits for the inevitable 'No, I'M Rand al Thor' flame warz.

So the game would be 1000 hours long, over the course of which each of your characters grow in strength disproportionate to reason (or their training), while managing to simultaneously remain feuding, whiny, insolent children?

When you put it like that, it sounds just like a Bethesda game.
