I knew it! Those animals aren't just attacking you, they're trying to free their enslaved monkey butler brethren!

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

To be honest, the only one you need to re-read before DoD is Reaper's Gale. How I wish I had done

I now have DoD as well. It is currently resting a mere 12 inches from me on my desk at work. It taunts me so. It pulls the eye from the monitor in front of me and calls my name. I must resist its lure. Only 3 chapters in and it already threatens to steal my soul.

I'm almost done reading "Bonehunters." Been ages since I've read it. I think this is second or third read of it. Totally forgot how fucking awesome it is.

I bought DoD a week ago but I couldn't start reading until this week. It feels great to be reading again. I'm about a third of the way through it.

Just about done "Toll of the Hounds." Slow book. Really hurts not having Fiddler and crew in the book.
Should I read Esselmont's "Crimson Guard" before jumping into DoD?

You probably should have read it before Toll, but if you want to, sure.

I'd say yes.
It'll refresh you between TtH and DoD.
Especially if you thought TtH was long. Because DoD has been long as well so far. It's only begun to pick up (where I am).

There's so much philosophizing. Just shut up, Kruppe, just shut up. I read 'em for the action and the humor. Not the weighty proclamations of life and death.

Ruh-roh, Shaggy.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Oh boy....
Read "RotCG" first then.
Or else it'll take half a book to get to the action in DoD through the philosophy and the talking about death.

I know. I skim. A lot.
Re-reads or first read? I'm assuming you aren't going to skim DoD, although some parts will make you want to.

You're making me sad.
On the plus side, Butcher's "Turn Coat" is waiting on the shelf, ready to go. Dresden is all action and humor!

Don't get me wrong, DoD is my favorite of the series so far. You'll know what I mean when you are done, though.

Seriously. I read the back blurb and I do not know what the fuck is going on. It's been a long since I've read any Erikson. I think I'm going to have go back a few books to catch up before jumping into "Dust."
I've read from "Gardens" to "Midnight Tides" enough that I think I can start on "Bonehunters" and go from there.
How embarrassing.

I am having essentially the same problem. I read TtH when it came out, but I've never done a Malazan reread. Even with the quick releases, I'm lost. Too much time reading WoT over and over again I guess. And school. I was excited to get DoD but it has been sitting on my shelf for a while now. I didn't even try to read it over Christmas break, because the prologue was depressing. I'm always lost in prologues, though, so I imagine if I just stuck it out I'd be okay.
