Has anyone seen the new show on Sci Fi network-- Caprica? It premiered last week, and seemed pretty worthwhile. Kinda creepy, which is cool, but I wonder where it's going. I've read that this is a prequel to Battlestar Galactica, which I've never seen, and I hope I'm not missing a lot of content I should be catching by not having watched it. I'm also hoping this is not going to wind up being something like the movie AI, which I thought was lame.

So, let the opinions flow...Apologies if there is a topic on this already, admittedly I did not look past first page, but as this is a new show, didn't think it would be that far down the list.

Oh, could be worth a look. BSG was excellent, except maybe the end :)

Just about to watch it now. Pretty excited :)

If you've never seen BSG... well, you should! But I'm guessing you might miss some stuff, though I dunno how many direct references there will be.

Is BSG on in re-runs? I've heard enough good about it I'm thinking of checking it out, but I don't want to buy box sets unless the price is way low.

Whoah.....you didn't like the end of BSG????? For real? That was a brilliant ending in my eyes.

The pilot was out (and aired) last year (about April 2009) and I thought it was pretty badass.

The actual first episode did NOT air last Friday as was planned by SyFy originally cause something else was on that would have pre-empted the demographic to watch so they bumped it to this week (tonight specifically) instead.

I LOVE that this is an epic family struggle between two great powerful dynasties, mixed with a second renaissance style storyline (Like B166ER from the Animatrix prequel of the same name about how humans came to create and ultimately subjugate artificial intelligence), and I know it going to go in some interesting directions. The Pilot gave us a lot to think about and some really decent character building.

I think Eric Stolz is absolutely brilliant in everything he does (I mean Robert Zemeckis shot half of Back to the Future with him as Marty McFly before deciding he was too "intense" for the role and he recast with Michael J. Fox...that makes him awesome), and Esai Morales is pretty decent (though I keep thinking of him in his role as Ritchie's drunken older brother in LaBamba)...but let's face facts....fanboys will watch because miss Alessandra Torresani (who plays Zoe Graystone, daughter of the man who created the first Cylon) is one seriously luscious hottie. I have high hopes for the series, and am preparing to watch tonight at ten on Space (here in Canada).

It's nice to be back in this universe again, and what's more, it's hella nice that they aren't trying to re-capture the format they used for BSG, but instead are building a drama based around humanity, families and the decisions that they make that lead us all down a certain path.

SO SAY WE ALL!

But seriously, I guess I was half-expecting an ending similar to the orginial series. In fairness, I can't really think of a better way for them to finish BSG. I remember feeling a bit let down and maybe I got caught up in thinking it wasn't what they (producers) had planned originally but got screwed up by the writer's strike.

I watched the pilot last night. It's on Sky1 on Tuesdays in the UK, I caught the repeat on Sky2 last night. It was pretty good, a bit slow, but that's pilots for you. The first Cylon was frakking ace at the end. The sound effects and Cylon dialogues were pure original series. I imagine it is going to cover up to the first Cylon war and be about AI rebelling against it's creator, like Quick said. The pilot shows where the Cylons get their super brains from at least, it's just a matter of it all playing out now.

@ Pilgrim - I think you can watch this without watching BSG however I think it might spoil some of the early mysteries in the BSG series that really hooked me into loving the series early on. Plus, we know what this prequel is working towards so that might add to the appeal. You should definitely check it if you get chance.

I think it's promising, but it was pretty predicatable, I hope that they can be as clever and as relevant as BSG was, especially the questions it asked about terrorism during the New Caprica plot.

I also loved the battle tactics in BSG, the consistency of their adherence to a kind of WW2 Aircraft Carrier engagement scenarios and the sheer believability of the the tech. I think it's very clever how they don't bother designing fantastical clothes and leave much of the cities as similar to ours rather than pointlessly and unrealistically futuristic, it makes it very real.

I enjoyed BSG during its run, great show, but I'm in the crowd of people who really didn't like the ending. While I was interested in Caprica prior to BSG's finale, and found the pilot pretty good, Daybreak pretty much burnt out any interest I had in the series for the time being.

I'll probably give Caprica a chance sometime in the future though.

I love this show. There's so much they can do with it, and the production is huge. Hopefully they'll stay on track for the (could-be-awesome) main story and not stuff in a lot of lame stand alone episodes like they did with BSG. 10 brilliant episodes per season is better than 20 mediocre ones I say.

I'm really digging it to. The fact that we already know that it all eventually leads to the near genocide of humanity only makes things more interesting. Even if things do turn out well for individual characters, it's going to end in ashes for the 12 Colonies.

I lost patience with this last night, unless I see some fucking Vipers or Battlestars they can fuck off. I'm not intersted in watching people emo out for 24 episodes.

I thought it improved a bit in the last episode. I don't think we're getting any Vipers or Battlestars anymore. I bet that's the pay off at the end of the series or something. At least there was a bit of action in this ep, although Matrix, much?! It is waaaaaaaaay too slow though.

I've watched a movie called Caprica about 1,5 week ago.

Is this in any way related to the series?

To keep the spoiler short, it's kinda bout how the Cylon's are developped.

Also watched "the Plan" this weekend, kind of a background story on some "Skinjobs"

Found both kinda amusing.

OK, I've given Caprica enough time now. It's totally shit!!! They are so busy with intrigue and teen/Cylon angst, they forgot to make it entertaining. It's so boring. Nothing happens, nothing makes you want to watch the next episode, it's total shit.

I've watched the first 8 eps so far, and I think it's surprisingly good. I like the introspection of it - a decadent society turned inward. I like all the acting. Some characters I could do without - Philomon the love-starved geek and Amanda's dead brother, for two. But I'm in for the duration. I am bothered that the first season is only 9 eps and now who knows when it will be back. That bodes ill for its staying power. Hope network doesn't kill it...but if they do, maybe it'll resurrect itself in V-world...
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

The season finale was awful.
