Hi ppl!

I'm on page 200 of GotM (loving it) and have a question about the "Dramatis Personae" and "Glossary" sections.

Do they contain spoilers?

When I was at around 100 pages I looked at the "Sorry" entry and was surprised when I read "Deadly killer disguised as young girl" (or something like that). I didn't know that yet! Posted Image
I thought that since the "Dramatis Personae" was at the beginning of the book it was safe for reading. Is it ? And the glossary?
I really really really hate spoilers.

Smiles!

You're supposed to be able to make that deduction yourself.

In the opening sequence where the two shadow gods come upon the girl they have a discussion to the extent of "do we use her or not. "

Then later you hear of a young girl who recently joined the army and she kills things, the other soldiers are wary of her and she generally does not act like a 15 year old.

Well, connect the dots.

Yes, I was aware of the shadow gods choosing her to be used.
BUT... It didn't diectly imply she was a killer. Only a "pawn" (as they said).
Maybe I should know that being chosen as a pawn for the gods = killer Posted Image

Anyway... I guess I should trust the Dramatis Personae after all... Right?

You can always read it at the end - that way you'll know who everyone is by then ;) ..and welcome to the forums.

It's not a severe spoiler but i see your point. That said, by the end of the prologue it's pretty clear what has happened superficially. There is massive chunks of stuff that only becomes clear(ish... sort of... kind of...) along the read.

Enjoy!

Nothing in the Dramatis Personae will tend to be huge spoilers that do not become fairly immediately obvious upon meeting the characters in question. The glossary can be a different matter, though I think in GotM it's not actually much of a problem - in later books there are some things which are a bit spoilerific.

I think the Dramatis Personae is relatively safe but you should be careful with the Glossary. I for one got something spoilered by reading the HoC glossary before ending the book.

I've always left them to the end, just in case they contained spoilers. Haven't come across any big ones yet though.

The only one I really noticed is that the Glossary tells you that Anomander Rake is an Ascendant.

I've been spoiler'd via the DP a couple of times - I couldn't help but make deductions, and then conclusions... As a rule, I leave it until I have finished each book, then have a good read to remind me of the goings on.

It's a bit like eating a good Sunday roast, and leaving a smidgen of all the veg/meat/yorkshire etc for that final mouthful....Which can (in certain circumstances) also lead to a full-on "Who can fit the most food in their mouth without Dad seeing" competition with your sisters (if you have any)...But that bit's not part of the simile...or is it?...Is this forum a metaphor for life??

I'm going for a lie down.

I always read the DP first before a fist read-through. I like the clues that you get, and seeing what Ascendants are going to be in play. Plus, the little jokes that sneak in

It is when you start reading GOTM, all you know is that he is a Tiste Andii and the lord of Moon's Spawn, you only find out later in the book that he is part of High House Dark.

Well, the DPs are part of the books. So what information you glean from them, you're supposed to know going into the story. It is therefore impossible for them to include spoilers. The stuff in the back of the book though, I can see why that would be a problem (there are a couple big spoilers in the RotCG glossary, for instance).
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Tell me, please, exactly what is spoiled by mentioning that characters readers of this forum will not even have heard of will be appearing in future books? Methinks you're being a bit over-sensitive.
