Art Challenge: Thel Akai

Very little is known about these guys. First Born of the Earth, two-man height, 'tusk-like teeth' (whatever that means), ancestral to the Toblakai and Trell, can merge with the earth in varying degrees (Denuth has basalt shoulders IIRC). It's an open challenge and an uncertain reward in this case

Before we get too many quotes in here, I suggest we perhaps place a RCG spoilers tag on the headline?
Anyway, a Tel Akai drawing would be strange. I imagine that, except their height they don't look much different than Humans. I guess you'd have to draw them next to some humans or average side structures to get the impression of their size.

I find it difficult to... build, a mental image of the Thel Akai

Your concept of a Thel Akai is great! Really like it.

will post my process for this one.
Initial sketch.
My thoughts: too much the martial/bodybuilder type. I like the oversized hands & small ears. may have just accidentally drawn Karsa.
Changes for next version: a neck. less defined muscles (still thick bodied though). slouched, apish posture. try a different facial structure.

opinions on direction?

I think the changes you mention are the right way to go. Maybe barrel chested, more ropy muscle, than body builder?
I'm having really hard time even picturing these guys.
Also, really digging the oversized hands.

Rejoice. For very bad things are about to happen

Thanks for the input Nobbs. I think ropy muscles might work better too & sort of tried that out this version.
2nd concept sketch
none of these sketches will have any relation to the final image in terms of pose or composition. the perpective & anatomy is extremely rough. Still just working out the form.
My thoughts: not sure what I think of this version. I need to sleep on it and look at it with fresh eyes. Heading in the right direction in some areas, wrong in others.
Head is still not ok. The chest is fucked up. I like the high, sloping shoulders, but they are too bulbous. Overall muscles on arms & body are much more appropriate but still not right, anatomy is weird.
changes for next version: add earth elements to body, maybe stone patches on areas of high impact like elbows, knees, knuckles and forehead. Revise head. Refine shoulders. Start properly addressing anatomy. create thumbnails of poses for starting the painted version.

open to input.

Hi Spindrift, I personally prefer the first picture. To me the muscle structure is perfect, though maybe should be layered under a bit of fat and hair. If you made the arms longer (on the first pic), much longer, so the hands were coming down to the knees it would give it a more natural look. For me it wouldn't need much chagning after that, save for making the neck slightly longer like you've already said.
Good drawings.

Battalion, thanks for the feedback. I (partially) disagree with you about the first one. I think with some minor changes it would make a good Theloman Toblakai, but I think a Thel Akai should be more animalistic (but not too much).
I think the problem is that the second one is too grotesque and monster-like. I like certain aspects of it but it's too inhuman. new sketch is trying to make it more proto-giant-human.
I think i'm finally heading in the right direction, even if i'm unhappy with where it is right now.

Wow!
I loved Urb's interpretation, absolutely outstanding!
I kind of saw him as Spin's's first sketch though.
But Urb has him imho.

'tusk-like teeth' (whatever that means)
Long canines that curve and stick up outside the mouth. I'd make a crappy sketch, but I'm too lazy. Here, have an orc.
Bloody WoW. Similar, perhaps?

Nice drawings everyone.
Tusk like teeth. I would think more than just canines, or we would be too close to Jaghut.
