To be quite honest, i had never heard of Steven Erikson untill one christmas a friend of mine gave me a present. I unwrapped it and what do you know, it was deadhouse gates. It's what got me interested in this series, how about everyone else???

Saw it in a shop. Bought it.

Your friend bought you book 2 of a series you hadn't started? What kind of stupid present is that?

I hadn't heard of Erikson, either, until a friend recommended him as better than Feist. So I read Gardens of the Moon, and struggled through it - I'm ashamed to admit I almost gave up about half way through, then I decided to continue, and since then it's become my favourite series, standing up to all competition. Then I read Deadhouse Gates, and it was by far the best book I had ever read - of any kind of fiction. And then Memories of Ice was even better. Even in the short time since I read GotM I think Erikson's become a lot more popular, and better known - and that was only about 2 years ago, but when I first joined these forums, it was about the only place I heard Erikson mentioned in fantasy, though there were a couple of exceptions. Now he's one of the better known ones, and mentioned pretty regularly.

I saw GotM in a shop and I remembered that some people recommended the series in an internet discussion. Read it, and I just couldn't stop.

Same here.. particularly one very good, in-depth review I saw on a WoT board encouraged me to order GotM and DG.

I learned about Erikson b/c of Martin. I had picked up George Martin a few years back thanks to some forum friends over at Terry Brooks boards, and someone told me that I should check out Erikson. I looked at the book and was hesitant. Finally about a year ago I picked it up and went through Gardens of the Moon quite quickly and now I'm a fan. I'm half way through Deadhouse right now and loving every second of it.

He knows how to weave a tale and I like it b/c its epic and large scale like Martin, cheers.

My personal shopper bought GotM and then lent it to me. Hedge is a great mate, whenever I go to stay with him, I have to take an extra bag for all of his stuff that I steal... I mean borrow!

My friend who used to run a bookshop recommended MoI to me, and I read it and was blown away, since the only fantasy I'd been reading before was WoT.

Consciously ignored GoTM for a year as it looked like another generic fantasy book, picked up Deadhouse Gates as there was nothing on it to indicate that it was the second book of a series (yes, a Malazan Book of the Fallen but nothing saying book 2) and loved it.

It drives me mad when I accidentally buy the second in a series (or whatever), so these days I always check the copyright dates if it doesn't say. Usually, earliest date = earliest in series.

I saw GotM in chapters near christmas time. It was under the local Authers seaction. It said he wrote his books in Winnipeg. I also baught it because It had a better cover then other fantisy novles. (None of that soft-core porn stuff) This any its not your tipical fantasy novel. No ORCS elvs and Darves. I don't like that king of stuff. I had truble understanding GotM but I kept at it and read the rest of the books.

I read the rave review for the series on Salon.com and decided I would give it a try. Picked up GotM on its US hardcover release, then waited for DG's US release, and upon finishing that decided to break down and order the rest through Amazon.ca. Finished MoI and am two/thirds of the way through HoC. Between Erikson and Martin, they have restored my faith in fantasy, and left me unable to even tolerate any other fantasy authors. They have spoiled me. Never read any WoT, never will.

I first heard about it some years ago, from a member of a The Terry Brooks forum actually, kept it in mind t, and have been enjoying it for a couple of years now, and even it better it has IMHO improved dramaticaly from Gardens of the Moon' which I did enjoy anyway.

A most excellent find.

It was the only fantasy book in the library of my hotel in Greece and I needed something to read on the beach. Spend the few days that was left speed-reading and ignoring my friends. It annoys me to this day that I didn't steal it. (It was a Trade paperback in good shape and noone knew that I had borrowed it!!!)

My friend was reading GotM on the train somewhere and when he put it down I borrowed it and read quite a bit. When I finished it I managed to track down DG and MoI in Australia, then ordered the last two from overseas :D Said friend can't stand the series, says it's too complicated.

Picke up DG in the local bookshop, mainly because of the cover, I have to admit :D Had quite a hard time struggling through the first couple of hundred of pages (what's a warren? what is a D'ivers? etc...). But the struggle paid off, and I was rewarded with one of the most gripping and emotional reading experiences so far. Then I found out that it is actually the second book in ongoing series... wooohoo!
