Hmm, I've always pictured Kalam as Forest Whittaker in "Ghost Dog - Way of the Samurai" - i.e. a big (huge) unit but with poise and grace. Good pic, but not how I see him.

I kinda always pictured Kalam as bald... but this piece is a lot more awesome.

Well done! Just pointing out, Kalam is described as bearish. Bearlike, but swift on feet.
If there were no smart people others wouldn't feel inadequate.

This is incredible. I would so hire you to do character art for my book, but I'm poor.
Personally, however, I am against the dreds. Not because I don't like them (quite the contrary) but because Kalam is explicitly stated as having short hair in the books. I believe it's in Deadhouse Gates, he is comparing his appearance to that of another warrior who has long hair, and it's clearly said that Kalam keeps his hair short so it can't be pulled in a fight. Also, I would have done the long-knife a little differently... it would be a little thicker. I have a hard time imagining it, because to me a 'long knife' should be shorter than a short-sword, but Erikson apparently has it the other way around, as when Coltaine's long knife snaps in the battle before Aren, it results in it being the length of a short sword. But I suppose there's room for interpretation in that... how long is a short sword, anyway?
In any case, had you kept the hood from the first version and let it be concluded that Kalam has cropped hair I would give this picture 1,000,000/1,000,000. As it is, I must only give it 999,999.9/1,000,000 for that inconsistency.

Awesome illustration, though similar to many other posters, I never pictured Kalam with dreadlocks! For some reason, I always picture him looking like Mos Def, but more muscular... :/

I think of the long knife as the same length or a tad longer than a short sword, but only bladed on one side and straight. Sort of like a wakishazi but more europian looking than oriental.

that's awesome. i picture Kalam like ?uestlove (but less fat more muscle) and Quick Ben like Danger Mouse (again, more muscle/tougher).
They came with white hands and left with red hands.
