The abilities of the First Sword Toolan rather than Dassem

So we're told Kilava slaughtered her clan but was fended of by her brother when she tried to take him out. Generally speaking it's my belief that a swordsman will fall before a mage unless they have some way of nullifying magic be it via Ottaral, some sort of spell cast on them or something. As such I'm wondering whether Toolan was granted certain abilities by virtue of the title he held or if Kilava simply refrained from spellcasting and stuck with her soletaken form. In GotM Tool seems to have some magic deadening abilities but that may be a result of the ritual as well being a GOTMism and in addition he fought Kilava prior to the Ritual

Well Bonecasters typically fight in their soletaken form from everything we've seen, so thats part of it. Another is that we've heard people talk about the strength inherent in Tool (K'rul inGotM, Lady Envy in MoI) and I think this gives him a sort of protection. We've learned that strength of will is incredibly important in this series, and I think Tool is pretty high on that list.

So, you're the historian who survived the Chain of Dogs.
Actually, I didn't.
It seems you stand alone.
It was ever thus.

The magic-deadening isn't really a GotMism - in MoI he talks about it to Toc, saying that at present Silverfox is drawing on it and the effect is much reduced. That being said, who knows if he had such ability imbued in himself before the Ritual, or if it was only afterwards...

Personally I was under the impression the field was present on all the T'lan Imass not just the 1st Sword since someone in GotM suggests that the only way to kill them is by chopping them to pieces

1st sword of the t'lan imass can have no equal with a blade.

It could just be that after killing the rest of her clan, Kilava stopped herself from attacking Tool, so they may not have a battle between them after all. From the way they talk to each other in MOI she still cares for her brother and vice versa. So in the end, the rest of the Imass they have been mistaken about what actually happened way back then.
In a world gone mad, we will not spank the monkey, but the monkey will spank us.

If you ask me it reads more like they spent so much time apart that whatever hatred they had for each other over that incident has cooled off and they've started to remember the good things about each other.

As far as we have seen amongst first swords, they don't really show they have any powers aside from being the absolute beast swords man. Dassem is a good example since he was the first sword of the empire, but he was claimed to have been killed at one of the battles before the events of GotM. Whether that claim is true or not is not the issue at hand. It just shows that first swords are mega people, unless of course they ascend and in that case they would obviously just be something different altogether. But, I digress. Tool wouldn't be any different then Dassem was, save that he was T'lan Imass and went through the Tellan Ritual. That seems the primary reason for his special abilities.
