Hey everyone. I've been reading Malazan since around 2005 and have since reread it quite a few times. I'd say my favorite book is currently MT, but it changes pretty often. RG is probably my least favorite, for what it's worth. I've been a lurker on this site for a little bit too now.

Anyway, I wrote a parody of GotM a little while ago. I posted it on Theoryland (a Wheel of Time site), but I wanted to know if people would be interested in reading something like that here. I don't know if anyone else has tried something like this, but I tried to make a respectable effort of it (it's about 40,000 words long). Anyway, let me know if you'd like to see this, or if you'd like to burn me at the stake for desecrating GotM or something like that. Thanks!

Is it just the first book that drags on? I have heard that other volumes are significantly better than the first.

Why can't I get through with this simple, less than seven hundred page novel?

As you've recognized, GotM is the slimmest and most tightly plotted novel in the series. If you find that it "drags"...I don't think you'll be any happier with the pacing in the other books. Although GotM is often the least popular volume, I don't think pacing is generally the reason. It's pretty much non-stop action as compared to the doorstoppers that make up the rest of the series.

Hi, I'm a new member here, although I've been lurking for a few months reading up on some explanations and trying to get a better feel for the series (which is rapidly becoming an absolute favorite of mine). I just finished reading The Bonehunters the other night, and felt like I wanted to start actually posting thoughts rather than just reading things.

To all you new readers - Enjoy!

Gardens of the Moon is a fantastic book and just as good as all the others. It's slightly negative press in some quarters probably derives from the fact that it caused rather a stir for being so different from the run of the mill fantasy that was out at the time. Most readers just weren't used to the level of cleverness contained in that book!!!

Don't worry if you don't get it straight away... read again. I was initially puzzled by a lot of things in the first book. So once finished, I read it again straight away and bit by bit it made more sense. This series is absolutely ideal for people whole like a bit of a puzzle. It just gets better the more of it you read. And your first re-read will be as amazing if not better.

If like me, you are a bit of a speed reader, you may also find that reading the book back to front over a long night and tons of coffee may not work with this series. I found that I simply had to read slower and read in smaller chunks because there was so much to take in. When something is really good, it is often better enjoyed in smaller quantities :)

Gratings to everyone.
I joined the forum a long time ago but because of work and college didn't have time to post up until now . I've been reading and re-reading Malazan for years now .
Most of my time is eaten up by reading, writing and tabletop rpgs, and work (basic IT job) and now i hope this forum.

Glad to be here, started reading the Malazan Book of the Fallen series not so long ago, and been enjoying my time ever since.

I'm not sure if this is the right place, but hi everyone! AS you can see my name is Shepherd of Ghosts, which isn't related to Malazan (as far as I know). I have just finished reading Gardens of the Moon, about to start on Deadhouse Gates, and I am loving the series so far. My favourite characters so far are Kruppe (Hilarious!) and Anomander Rake (Such a badass), although Paran's storyline is really intriguing too. As for personal information, I'm 16, from Australia, I like heavy metal music and I enjoy reading high fantasy. I'm not sure what else to put in here, so I guess that's it. I'll see you around the forums!

Hi people! I've been reading (and re-reading) Malazan for a good few years now. My favourite books in the main series change every time I re-read it, but MOI and MT are the ones I always look forward to the most.

Fantasy is pretty much all I read - recent favourites are Brent Weeks' Lightbringer series, Pat Rothfuss' Kingkiller Chronicles, and Mark Lawrence's Broken Empire - and this seems a great place to just generally chat about all the stuff I really like. So, good to meet you all! :p

Hi guys, I thought I'd be civilised and start here before diving head first in true malazan style. I'm 20 from Ireland and am currently on my first full re-read of all the malazan books. Favorite characters are probably (nay definitely) Kruppe, Grizzan Farl, t'renn, quick, ST, tehol and bugg, and Karsa. I guess that'll do as after a few months of shadowing the forum I want to just jump in

Hi everyone. Just found this site looking for one of Steven Erikson's books. Started collecting recently and thought I saw someone who had a Subterranean Press lettered and signed edition of either the first or second Malazan books. Thus the display name - Faint - Mazalan trader, heh. Looking forward to reading all of Steven Erikson's books now. So, "hi, hi".

Hi all! I just started reading the malazan series and I have only read GotM and DG as of yet. I am looking forward to meet the people in the forum and share thoughts and opinions with people who have read these books; truth be told these books makes you want to talk all the time and unfortunately I don't have anybody in my surroundings who like these kinds of books. It's my first forum ever and I guess I am not really good at it because I already posted twice and I don't have made the best impression. Also English isn't my first language so I apologize for any mistakes I may make in the future or for maybe choosing the wrong words sometimes.
I really like this series and I really hope it stays that good. So, I was wondering which book you guys think is the best of the whole series?
Nice to meet you all!P1

Hi! I LOVE the Malazan series, and I was totally unaware that there was a website! I suppose it should have dawned on me that this epic saga should have had a page...

Hello!
I've been reading the forums off and on for a while and thought it was about time I actually signed up - I've been reading Malazan for a couple of years now and just finishing off my second full re-read, as well as following the Tor one. I have a thing for big, weighty fantasy series (e.g. Jordan, GRRM, etc.), so have been hugely enjoying Malazan, particularly the anthropological weight of the world-building (and the irreverent soldiers ;)

Greetings. I just finished my digital copy of bone hunters and started reading Reapers Gale and under the acknowledgments I saw that he thanked this site. I had no idea it exhisted. I am on my third reading through The Book of the Fallen. Ive read the others once. I will re-read the other books soon. To be honest I am jonesing for the rest of Forge of Darkness. I suppose Bauchelain and Korbal Broach's new story will be good as well. There is so much I want to know. I have read most major series in the genre and this is by far and the best. I bought Gardens of the Moon randomly in a book store in need of something to keep me busy while I was waiting for Sanderson to Finish Jordans Wheel of Time. By the time he completed the story I barely cared so obsessed was I. I am not a big forum guy. But I am happy to find others who love this writing as much as I. Thank you all.

Hi ML, and welcome to the Malazan Forums!

A quick pointer - spoilers.

We try, really hard, to preserve everyone's enjoyment of the books by keeping information about the books to the forums for that book and later.

So, by example, the revelation that
Spoiler
dies in Deadhouse Gates would only be unblocked in the DG forum, and later book forums, or in the General forum which is
no blocks, read-at-your-own-risk, anything goes.

Bubba and I editted your above post to block the spoilers you included. You can block things by typing the word spoiler inside square brackets [ ], then close the bracket with the same thing plus a / before the ].

Jump in where you like, come by the OtherLit forum to discuss the other authors you enjoy, and any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

- Abyss, like a welcome wagon with an AK47.

Hey everybody,

I'm new here and I'm currently reading Memories of Ice after reading Deadhouse Gates twice because I didn't understand it all the first time, but I think I'm good for now. My favorite characters are Tool and Kalam.

Peace
